Looks like I will be getting the GS5. My upgrade will be available then.
A press release added that the South Korean firm hoped devices based on the technology could be brought to market by 2020, offering mobile data transfers "up to several hundred times faster" than today's 4G tech.
To put this in perspective 1gbps is about as fast as copying a file to/from a mechanical hard drive... and can theoretically download a file at around 120MB/s

There won't be a single consumer-facing server that provides a single client 1Gbps, even in 2020
I don't even get 3G yet, stop doing things
the title is misleading, 3g 4g are communication standards, what samsung has done is propose something that could be used in the next standard. For instance AES was established from a list of competing algorithms, some can improve security over others that didn't make the standard.
4G is hardly a standard
Tell me if I'm wrong, but even if you have a 4G capable phone there isn't anywhere I know of in the UK that gives you 4G.
Fuck it, I can hardly get 3G or EDGE in most places.

Generally speaking the EU is behind the US and a lot of Asia in 4g because we have a much more solid 3g infrastructure really. Admittedly that doesn't mean the infrastructure is still often lacking.

I barely get 3G either, never had 4G on my S3 either.
the 4G that's marketed now isn't even true 4G
I dunno 1MB/s seemed like a dream by 2007 and now we have consumer services with tenfold that speed even on mobile, also oh Google Fiber and competition
I'm lucky to get consistent 300KB/s on my 3G connection, let alone 1MB/s my desktop when we pay for a 50Mb/s connection (that would be 6.25MB/s guaranteed.)
You're not going to get what you're advertised on a phone in 90% of cases

EDGE is pretty easy to catch in most places around here, but for 3G it's usually only in big cities/mid towns/near highways.
I'm just saying that even now, while 4G has amazing bandwidth, the websites and services that you use do not - I'd expect the same to be true when 5G is the "standard"
Aw damn, ninja'd by das boot
4G is amazing, my GS3 4G gets a 70mb connection with it.
