NP - Noun Phrase
PN - Proper Noun
N - Noun
V - Verb
Formulated in 1976 by William J. Rapaport, a professor at the University of Buffalo, was created to show how homonyms and homophones can create a confusing sentence with a nearly indecipherable meaning.
How does it work?
Imagine it this way:
'Buffalo', with a big 'B', is a proper adjective describing the 'buffalo' directly after it. Thus, 'buffalo's directly following 'Buffalo's are your average buffalo mammal. Any buffalo not following 'Buffalo' are therefor verbs. What does buffalo mean? To bully. And so, the end product is this:
[Those] (Buffalo buffalo) [whom] (Buffalo buffalo) buffalo, buffalo (Buffalo buffalo).
OR
[Those] buffalo(es) from Buffalo [that are intimidated by] buffalo(es) from Buffalo intimidate buffalo(es) from Buffalo.
OR
Bison from Buffalo, New York, who are intimidated by other bison in their community also happen to intimidate other bison in their community.
OR
THE buffalo FROM Buffalo WHO ARE buffaloed BY buffalo FROM Buffalo ALSO buffalo THE buffalo FROM Buffalo.
