Veterinarian Livia Pereira kisses Ariel. (AAP)
A 140kg lion suffering from paralysis in all four of its legs is receiving treatment thanks to tens of thousands of dollars worth of donations from internet supporters.
Three-year-old Ariel suffers from a degenerative disease which affects its motor functions, leaving it unable to walk, Associated Press reported.
The lion was born healthy in an animal shelter in the Brazilian city of Maringa, but started showing symptoms of paralysis and pain when it was 10 months old.
"He was a perfectly normal and docile lion that slept with me until he was 10 months old," owner Raquel Borges said.
But Ariel started limping one day, before rapidly becoming unable to move its hind legs.
Surgery to remove a herniated disc left the feline paralysed in its front legs as well.
Donations from more than 35,000 people, who found out about the lion online, have allowed Mrs Borges to continue Ariel's $12,500-a-month treatment in the city of Sao Paulo.
Veterinary neurologists from Israel travelled to Ariel's home in an effort to discover the cause of its paralysis.
Despite a grim prognosis, Mrs Borges is optimistic Ariel will be able to walk again one day.
Does anyone have some paralyze heal because this news is absolutely stunning!
That's really sweet...
But...Surely the money could be sent to better causes?
It often annoys me how inconsistent people are on the internet. They save a lion because of cute pictures taken of it (not that it isn't cute!), but there's humans out there that need the money far more... But there's no cute pictures of them.
I want to make it clear, I'm not trying to rain on one's parade. This is a very nice thing to do. But I can't help but feel so much money put into this when it could be used to help... Humans.
I dunno. I guess people will spend their money where they want it to go. Except taxes.
Nothing to say but
a'wwwwwww
Poor thing.

You're gonna get some hate for that but you're right.

Unfortunately, they probably will have to.
It costs $12,500 a month? That's a lot of money..
I read the thread title as "Thousands help paralyze lion."
Oh, and how friendly of them.
:3:

It's hard, but I agree.
It's cool that many people donated to help this lion. I mean there are better causes but saving lions is neat too.
I hate when people name animals as "it", and not "her" or "him"
They have genders too :v: And they aren't just inanimate objects
The lion needs a parlyz heal

I call my pets it all the time. I still take care of them and that though.

We're all part of the biosphere, humans and lions alike.
We've already, as a species, destroyed countless other species of animals and their habitat. Thinking only about our own kind is pretty selfish, especially after all we've done to them.
I love lions :3

Why should we bother?
Why should we bother?
Since when did using pronouns necessitate "bothering" at all?

"Sorry, little Timmy, I know you've been hoping for that life-saving surgery, but considering what we've done to the animals, well... helping you would just be plain selfish. "

First fix the human race's problems then move on to other things.
hey maybe we should help all the people that are fucked over first and THEN the lion
Or just fuck the lion and shoot his ass
There are so many people cares about a random lion, and when it comes to a fellow human being needing the money for surgery for the same suffering, much fewer cares about him or her.
I honestly don't understand that.

we aren't furry and cute, so nobody gives a shit
that's literally the only reason

That's basically what I'm saying, people would care about an animal more than a fellow human, simply because it's not a human.
This is adorable until you consider how many people in thrid world countries could have been saved with that money. But no, saving one lion is clearly more important to people than starving children.
We should help ourselves and forget the fuckin' animals. Once the animals start contributing the field of medicine and donating money to help us then we can start helping them back. It's a foolproof plan.
