To avert a new apocalypse – this time set for February 2013 – scientists suggest confronting asteroid 2012 DA14 with either paint, or big guns. The tough part of either scheme is that time has long run out to build a spaceship for any operation.
NASA confirms the 60-meter (197-feet) asteroid, spotted by Spanish stargazers in February, has a good chance of colliding with Earth in eleven months.
The rock's closest approach to the planet is scheduled for February 15, 2013, when the distance between the planet and space wanderer will be under 27,000 km (16,700 miles). This is lower than the geosynchronous orbit kept by the Google Maps satellite.
Well.... fuck
I hope the moon can protect us from this one by hopefully getting into the path of its orbit like what it has been doing to numerous astroids over millions of years.
But how devastating can a 60 meter asteroid bring upon impact on Earth?
EDIT:
Got the answer
“The asteroid may split into pieces entering the atmosphere. In this case, most part of it will never reach the planet’s surface,” remarks Dunham.
But if the entire asteroid is to crash into the planet, the impact will be as hard as in the Tunguska blast, which in 1908 knocked down trees over a total area of 2,150 sq km (830 sq miles) in Siberia. This is almost the size of Luxembourg. In today’s case, the destination of the asteroid is yet to be determined.

Scary :(
I hope it burns up.
Is this source credible? This strikes me as the type of news that would be sensationalist, overstated or poorly reported.
Feb, 2013? Too bad the world will already be over by then. Duh...
I hope it hits the moon instead

In the article it says the crater would be no bigger than the one from the Tunguska event. So let's hope this one hit's in the middle of nowhere in Siberia too.
'A good chance' isnt really comforting. I would have thought they would be able to tell where it was heading pretty quickly.
Fuck no, I can't die a virgin.
Because I heard about this, but this is sounding a lot more doom and gloom than I heard originally.
It's almost as big as a football field. This does not look good, folks.
Will most likely hit the ocean. If it hits an unpopulated area and someone is near enough to film it hit, that would be excellent though.
EDIT: Actually, that would be fucking bad if this hit land, considering that the Tunguska meteor was roughly 50-100 meters.
Hopefully it hits Siberia like the first one did.
it would be reduced to a pebble with our atmosphere
um, this article isn't even internally consistent.
like, it mentions it being apocalyptic and then at the end it's like "this will be the same strength as something that happened in 1908"

Interested in how much dust and earth it'll throw into the air.
And burn up upon entry.
Worst case scenario: It hits a major city
Best case scenario: It hits North Korea
Likely scenario: It hits a forest somewhere in Canada or Russia.
North Koreans aren't bad people.
I wonder if it would hit the middle east

I thought that was from Tesla overcharging his laboratory to fight off the Templars. Now I'm being told it was an Asteroid? What is this?

yes, the best case scenario is that it hits a country populated by millions of people
yay genocide!!

Even more likely scenario: it'll land in a body of water

Oh no poor OvB
Well... this certainly going to be interesting.
oh wow don't even be worried about this
99.97800000% chance the asteroid will miss the Earth

How is that good? North Koreans are still people.
I'm banking on it hitting NASA in some highly coincidental yet humourous outcome
Isn't RT.com that site that blows anything bad about the west up to idiotic proportions?
OH FUCK!
[sub]It will probably break up within our Atmosphere[/sub]
I question the credibility of the source within the OP.
The "good chance" of an impact is 0.022%, or a 1 in 4,550 chance.

Woops, just noticed that other comment above me.
Well it won't be the apocalypse, that's for sure. So it's not total decimation.
Realistically it will probably hit somewhere in the ocean, if not the ground. Destruction in and round the impact zone and fucked up weather for the rest of us.
