• $1250 budget, no idea on what to get

I've had my (pre-built) PC for around 6 years now, and I figure it's time to finally move on (and I'm tired of playing games on ultra-low settings). Because of their age, most of the parts will probably be unusable/ not worth keeping, and any upgrades I may have purchased were bought because they were cheap. (Current computer: Pentium 4 3.1GHz, 3GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB HD, 1920x1080 monitor, 9400 GT (EVGA) ) I do have my ASUS VH222H (1920x1080) monitor, which I am planning on keeping. I am also planning on re-using my keyboard, mouse, and speakers, as they are still functioning quite well. My current hard drive is only 160GB, and has been full or near-full for the past few months, so I would like a new one. Additionally, my OS is Windows XP, and with this new computer I would like to have Windows 7. My optical drive still works, but I would prefer to get a new one. My current graphics card is not very good. I currently have 3GB of DDR2 RAM, so I'll probably need some new RAM as well. I have working speakers, but my sound card isn't doing very well. Most of the games I play are Valve (source) games. However, I do play other games as well. I live in the US. Summary: Need a new computer:

Budget $1250(USD)
I live in the US (near Washington, D.C.)
I can reuse my:

Keyboard
Mouse
Speakers
Monitor
But I need new:

Operating System: Windows 7
Hard Drive: Minimum 500GB
Processor
Memory: At least 4GB
Sound card (Not too picky about this or the optical drive)
Optical Drive
Case
Motherboard
PSU
Anything else necessary that I haven't listed/ don't know about
(Basically everything.) Any help would be appreciated, and as you may have guessed, this is my first time building a PC. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!
