Senator threatens to shut down the government if we arm Syrian rebels.
(CNN) -- As the pounding of war drums intensifies against ISIS and its advances in Iraq and Syria, at least one senator is voicing opposition to plans to arm Syrian rebels and says he's willing to shut down the government over it.
Sen. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat who often finds himself at odds with the White House, said spending $500 million to provide weapons to groups in Syria that are fighting both ISIS and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will backfire.
"At the end of the day, most of the arms that we give to people are used against us. Most of the people we train turn against us," Manchin said Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."
I can actually see some others supporting him on that, especially Rand Paul.
While I agree, I think shutting down the government is extreme and makes us look hypocritical like the Republicans.
I wont support shutting down the government, period. It doesn't matter what it is over or which party wants to do it. In the end, we can find other ways to protest the stupid measure of arming the Syrians.

Do you think there is never a scenario where it is justified?
we trained, funded, and armed the syrian rebels since 2012 and this is what we got out of it
a terrorist group we allowed to grow strong and the potential of warfare with another nation
there are no/very few moderate rebels in syria. the larger groups that call themselves moderate openly perform joint operations with al-nusra and groups like the islamic state. directly or indirectly we allowed the islamic state to become what it is now. funny how our greatly delayed decision to intervene in syria has to come now of all times.
its a shit storm and we're about to jump into it. the entire order of the world is probably going to be changed greatly by the end of this decade.
yeah obama, its a great idea to arm moderate maniacs to fight maniacal maniacs
no chance of catastrophic backfire
:)

After the Ukraine Crisis began I expected Putin to invade the whole of Ukraine and restore the old regime. I was surprised he only limited himself to a few small areas.
Oh hey, a senator that isn't a complete dumbass and realizes that throwing arms into the region is fucking stupid. Cool.
And yet he's still a dumbass for threatening a government shutdown over it.

What are you talking about??? It worked so well last time!!!
Holy shit, one Democrat who doesn't throw out his anti-warmongering beliefs the second a Democrat holds the White House. I thought they were all gone.

Except he is a complete dumbass because he's threatening to shut down the government.
Honestly it's hypocritical how FP lambastes Republicans for the government shutdown before but somehow think it's justified for the Democrats.

Now, my two cents: last time we gave arms to the region we created fucking Al-Qaeda, so no shit it's a bad idea to arm terrorists even if they're not after us for the moment.
How the fuck does anyone think this is a good idea? I mean how in the fuck is this a good idea? Fuck our government is ran by fucking morons. Part of it wants to arm shady ass motherfuckers who will most likely become just like ISIS, while the other wants to shutdown, affecting millions of American citizens, and jobs. Fucking retards.
Does this include the kurds?
although loading up an already explosive region with weapons seems like a bad idea, why is it that whenever there is a political problem of any sort the immediate answer is "let's shut down the governmen!!", why is that even a thing?
I thought the government was already shutdown
Of course we need to arm the Syrian rebels, if we don't then who will we go to war with after ISIS is defeated? We can't go have those poor defense contractors lose sales now can we?
Does the american government have like a big switch that when flipped all the politicians will go like "bzzzzeeooowww...." and stop dead in their tracks?

You know too much. :tinfoil:
While shutting down the government is definetely going too far, this ISIS policy reeks of the old Cold War strategy of simply arming who ever is fighting the enemy.
