• In need of a gaming laptop for University, £1000+ budget.

So, I'm going to University later this year hopefully and I'm going to need a laptop for when I do. It'd preferably be able to play modern games on decent settings, with a good bit of processor power for compiling. My current budget is £1000 but I'm saving up more and will hopefully have a £1200-1500 budget by the end of it. Before you tell me to build a desktop, trust me, I would if I could. However I need it for portability and because I'm sure my dorm won't be that big. UK only shops though, please. Anyone have any ideas?
With a laptop like that, it probably won't be very portable at all. Consider a netbook + desktop combo?
What Jaehead said. You'd be better off with getting a decent desktop with a cheaper laptop to bring to class.
Well realistically the dorm rooms will be enough for a computer and things they generally are but a laptop is obviously a space saver. What you should really do is think about why you want the portability just to take notes in class? or do you need to actually do things in class? Because just to tell you now there is not much chance of getting the correct balance when it comes too gaming & portability. Because i am guessing that you are going to want good battery life as well so really think about it do you really require a gaming laptop or do you think it a better idea to try and get a cheap net book perhaps and a gaming machine.
gx640-260us i just bought it myself, awaiting for it to arrive [editline]06:56PM[/editline] msi brand fyi
Really, I don't feel like lugging a desktop to University with me and I guess Portability isn't that much of a concern. And seeing as I'm doing a course in Games Design, a lot of it will be done in 3D modelling programs and various other power-digesting computer programs. Hence why I wanted the power. It doesn't have to be incredibly high-end or anything, just with enough power to play games at a decent framerate on medium-high (especially looking at Fallout New Vegas, WoW and Starcraft.) Google isn't helping much.
I just looked up that laptop (the MSI one) in notebookcheck, and apparently, the price is 1200 euro, it has poor battery life, GPU tops over 100C under full load, and the screen is not very bright. You can read the review yourself here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-MSI-GX640-i5447LW7P-Notebook.30776.0.html So alternatively, you also might want to check out the Asus G73JH, which has an i7, and a 5870, for 1400 euros. Read the review here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-G73JH-ATI-HD-5870-Gaming-Notebook.28191.0.html Here is a link where you can buy it: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/173-Asus-G73JH-TZ008V-16-28GHz-Core-i7-720QM-8GB-Mem-1TGB-HDD-Blu-Ray-Win-7-HP-(64-bit) I tried to find the MSI laptop, but I couldn't. EDIT: I'm comparing the specs between those two laptops right now, and the Asus laptop is better in every way. I know it has that 'Republic of Gamers' on it, but if I had 1400 euro to spend on a laptop, I would get that.

I've been looking at the GX740 which got a pretty good review from What Laptop. Only problem is I can only find one Online retailer that sells it and for some reason they sell it with a GTS 250M graphics card :argh: [editline]05:03AM[/editline]
Here is a link where you can buy it: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/173-Asus-G73JH-TZ008V-16-28GHz-Core-i7-720QM-8GB-Mem-1TGB-HDD-Blu-Ray-Win-7-HP-(64-bit)
Sounds like a pretty sexy laptop, pity that link is a 404 v:v:v

It's also not available at the moment :v:

Don't waste your money, gaming laptops can't be upgraded and end up being completely useless for gaming. Not only that but if you want to take it to lectures etc. you need it to be portable and a gaming laptop is rarely that. It's pointless. Save your money and buy a fucking awesome desktop that you can look to upgrade in the future. Don't make the same mistake I did (in the process of saving for my own desktop).
Technology. One step forewards and two steps back. Use a notepad and a pen, works just as well. [editline]10:18PM[/editline] And its easier to draw stuff if needed,
It's not worth going to uni, just do an apprenticeship somewhere, trust meeee.
It's not worth going to uni, just do an apprenticeship somewhere, trust meeee.
Seriously? you think that? well i am not going to tell you what to do or anything but that is stupid. I am sorry but you can not get a good job without a degree or 20+ years of experience in that particular field making uni a quicker and overall better choice. Also how will you go out and turn your student loan into top shelf? hell people say goto uni for the experience first the education second XD
Dell XPS m1730. I'm using it right now. If you want to look into this laptop, please.. 1) Get a good deal. Since it's now slowly creeping into mid range your budget might be able to find a maxed out one. (2.8ghz extreme processor versus the basic 2.4ghz, and dual 8800's versus the basic dual 8700's) 2) Get a warranty. It will save your ass if something goes wrong with the computer. My two year warranty is only almost half over but it payed for 1/3 of itself shortly after getting the laptop, because it got me a new power adapter. 3) It would really, really help to get a laptop cooler. Even if you prop the laptop up on something to give it more breathing room, it will still get hot and downclock itself during intense gaming. (I highly suggest this one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834998686) Of course, a cheaper desktop and a decent notebook is probably just as good if not better in some situations.
OK, many jobs require a degree but if you've seen the news lately many students leave uni and can't get jobs.
This is also true all over the news about that stuff but in fairness some people goto uni and get these stupid ass degrees in philosophy and such no wonder they are not getting a job.
I'll stick with going to Uni, thanks. I don't want to leave education yet anyway. But yeah, maybe I was wrong. Maybe it would be worth just building a computer to take with me, we'll see.
