So now you can have Aero and better 3D support within your virtual machine (Vista/7)

Download it now at: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.1.0_BETA2/
I would also like to note it is significantly faster too.

What's new here?
Clone feature?
FINALLY!! I've missed that for ages.
What's new here?
RAM cap raised from 128 to 256
WDDM support only for windows 7?
Because I installed vista in Vbox and aero still can't be enabled.
Unless something special needs to be done
Wow, only took the fuckers long-enough... O_O

If you're so upset, why didn't you do it yourself? It's open-source, you know.
(I'm implying it's not a 5-minute job, and there's more for them to do than implement fancy 3D features to something with a business server market)

Just saying, they could have implemented it shortly after Vista's release, but they didn't.

Except that it probably took them that long to develop. Virtualization is a complicated subject, especially when you want to synchronize and subdivide something that isn't directly accessible (VRAM) via the most commonly used APIs (OpenGL and DirectX)
[editline]10th July 2011[/editline]
they're essentially writing a DirectX implementation that passess all the data through to the system graphics card, but also keeping track of, and limiting, the amount of VRAM used.

have you installed the guest additions?
and the 3D drivers?
[editline]11th July 2011[/editline]
aero is really laggy.

I'd say there's a buldge in my pants, but I'm not wearing any.

For some reason it works a whole lot better in vista.

maybe because aero on vista is direct x 9?

They both use DirectX 9Ex.

Windows 7 uses DirectX 10.1 for DWM. They get half the memory usage as a result.

Just repeating what I said on steam for others: I doubt VBox supports DX10+
Wanted to install it. At the end of installation it tired to place those shortcuts to start menu and other places. It came up with an error that it didn't have the privileges to do that.
EDIT:
Wait! What? Rolling back changes just deleted the old one I had too.
The unaccessible folder is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Oracle VM VirtualBox. I can see that folder in the directory, but can't access it either. I have no permissions to view it's permissions too. WTF Windows? How is this even possible?
Can't even install Windows 8 x64 in Virtualbox, as my Pentium dual-core is 64-bit, but doesn't have virtualization options in the BIOS. Latest BIOS too. :<

Hardware-accelerated acceleration (AMD-V etc.) aren't handled by the motherboard, they're a part of the CPU.
BIOS version can't change that.
oooo, its working on Ubuntu

runs horribly though, might try vista.
[editline]11th July 2011[/editline]
just get a black screen with vista

I've installed the 3D drivers, still can't enable it.
That's in both 7 and Vista.
when it asked if you wanted to install basic 3d drivers did you click yes? because if so you fcuked up.

Makes sense... So I need to upgrade my CPU then. It's a laptop with a Socket P (478), and it can handle a Core2Quad. :D

Yeah I seem to have fucked up by not reading text boxes.
Atleast, it gives me the option to turn it on except nothing happens.
Currently stuck on the welcome screen.
Just wondering... why is there a VRAM cap anyway? Or, more like, why is there not a switch to go over that 256MB limit?
There must be some kind of a technical reason for this. Anyone know?
i think it is because it emulates an actual video card.
This is now out of beta.
Updating VirtualBox is still a pain. There should be a decent auto-updater.
This version appears to have a memory leak if you leave the computer for a while (20-30 minutes) with a VM running.
Atleast with my vista VM, not tried with others.
Anyone else on Arch getting a 100% cpu freeze in dxdiag (and any 3d application) since the 4.1 update?
Same across XP, 7 and 2008 guests for me :(

It didn't when I opened DXDiag, but when I opened Chess Titans it froze. I rebooted and the driver didn't even load. Rebooted again and it worked.
Though 3D applications seem to flicker (with the exception of DWM)
