UPDATE: My friend Tom Harvey reported yesterday in the Salt Lake Tribune that Travis Wright, who ran Waterford Funding, entered a plea of not guilty before U.S. Magistrate Paul Warner to the charge of mail fraud. The article can be found here.
On July 7, 2010 the New York Times ran a story about the SEC’s recent lawsuit against Travis Wright and Waterford Funding. The SEC’s press release about the case can be found here. Among other things, the SEC’s lawsuit alleges that Wright lied to his investors saying he was investing their money in hard money loans secured by real estate, when really he was funneling most of their money to the inventor of the “Candwich” (who also planned to offer Pepperoni Pizza Pockets and French toast in a can). Yum.
This is the part that is really baffling to me about this case. Did he really think the Candwich would be more profitable than real estate? Given the current state of the real estate market it may be the case — but not between 2001 and 2007 when the fund was really going strong. The SEC also alleges that he used $15 million of investor funds for personal use, including the purchase of a $5 million home on Walker Lane from former Jazz legend Jeff Hornacek, which he completely renovated and imported cobblestones from France for the driveway. But it was probably pretty trashy after Hornacek moved out.
You gotta love it when the New York Times decides to write about Utah culture. The article says: ”Utah has long endured a reputation as a place where many people are naïve or trusting to the point of losing their shirts.” True or not, Mr. Wright raised $145 million from 175 investors — most of whom were based in Utah — by promising returns of 24%. The SEC alleges that only $6 million of the total amount raised was actually invested in hard money loans as represented. But at least he actually invested most of the money, albeit in a different place than where it was supposed to go. In my experience many perpetrators of Ponzi schemes simply pocket the money or buy cars with it.
And in case you’re wondering, the Candwich may still be coming to a store near you. The president of Mark One Foods, Mark Kirkland, hopes to go into production later this year. Unfortunately that is probably little consolation to the Waterford Investors who are unlikely to see much (if any) of their original investment returned.
I don't know about you guys but I've been waiting for this to come out for forever now.
I would never eat that
Canned shit is always disgusting
Why was I rated late? This was an article written to update everyone on what is happening since it was supposed to come out about 6 months ago.

Fucking FUND IT.
I certainly wouldn't mind a sandwich in a can. It won't get smushed like it's in a sandwich bag, and it'll last a lot longer, too.
Oh my god.
Absolutely not.
No
I'm going to invent canned food which is also canned into another can.

Honestly yeah, those pros are pretty good. If it actually tastes good and is cheap, then this is kind of a good idea. Don't knock it before you try it!
I came here expecting some kind of Canada sandwich. I am now disappointed.
Dear God, what?
That looks horribly nasty.
I'm gonna go ahead and avoid anything other than soup or soda that comes from cans, thanks.

I make my sandwiches better then that... even better then quiznos.
I'd try one just to see what it's like.
Don't toss it till you try it. I wouldn't fund it till I knew it was atleast mildly good tasting.

Also! Anyone who thinks this is turkey in a can...

It's a lunchable basically. If any of you had the peanutbutter/jelly packages at breakfest joints you'll already know this is pretty safe to eat.

Is it healthy?
Sure why not, could be good, and if it's terrible at least it's a novelty.
Candwich as in candy+sandwich? YES!
Candwich as in canned sandwich? NO!
I'm already thinking how awesome it would be to have a lunch machine where you can make your combos of a canwhich, and a beverage of choice, and just put in some cash, and get an instant lunch.
I sure as hell wouldn't eat any of the ones with meat, but I can see a PB&J being reasonable. Not better than, you know, one you make yourself for much less money but still.

A bit disappointing that it's basically a Lunchable in a can that you have to put together yourself. I thought it would be like you pop off the top and out slides a ready sandwich. v:v:v
I see the pros about it being built to be distributed in existing canned drink distribution channels, though. Sandwich kits out of a soft drink-style machine? Sure, why not? The can at least ensures the bread isn't smashed or anything, too. Pretty good concept, in my opinion; he could be on to something.
Now we just wait to see if it actually tastes good...
I'd at least try on of the non-meat ones, I mean, I'm not a fan of canned meats to begin with. I don't like spam at all.
It's a fucking piece of bread and 2 packets of sauce in a can. That's no fun, it might as well be in a box.
I thought it was going to be a sandwich full of candy
I would probably eat it if I had to take a sandwich with me on a trip or something, although it's probably terrible for you
Sounds like the best thing since canned bread.
Maybe it's because I am nervous so feeling unwell today but the BBQ one looks disgusting in the picture.
nah
