Hi guys.
So as part of one our course modules we've been given a live brief to come up with a repeating pattern that can be printed on wrapping/tissue paper of sorts, and be used at any time of the year. Now I jumped right in there and started making a leaf design, but now although the pattern repeats, I can't seem to find a way to crop it so that I essentially have a tile that I can repeat, as apposed to a whole pattern I have to layer up... I hope you know what I mean.
So I am here to ask you creative people if you can help me find a solution to this problem! I've tried rotating it and have had no luck with that, so I guess all I really want to know is if it's possible or not. Also this is work from a scan of a sketch so remember it's only just in it's baby years, so don't jip me for bad quality.

Find the same point like 4 times and draw straight lines from that point to it's corresponding twin either below or to the side of it.
This one is a diamond shape.
I think it might be quite difficult with that pattern, as although it repeats its not a perface repeat. Not sure if you already know this but basically with repeating patterns, the top of the image is the seam of the bottom of the image.
Heres a quick image I made to try and explain it:

You could also get as close to the edge as possible, but not over the edge of the canvas and get a pretty nice repeating pattern.
Again heres a quick really rushed example:

And repeated:

It's best to cover the now very easy-to-spot edges of the tiles by wrapping leaves around the edges. Basically, make a leaf, place it over one of the edges of the tile, then cut it in half where it hits the edge, and place the other side on the opposite edge.
Yeah doing that removes the grid-like lines, just means you might need to create a new design.
This be how you do it.

Don't tie everything to only be INSIDE your square. Make it go outside and end up on the other side.
Think of it as an old commodore or SNES game where touching the outside of the sides will only bring you to the other side.
Now then, the way I would go on about cropping your drawing is either
A) Redraw it, but draw it in the square system I or Sharpshooter have used. Be sure to make things go outside the edges and over to the opposite side.
or
B) Scan it in the highest possible resolution and throw it in Photoshop. Duplicate the layer, set it to 50% opacity and move it so the right side of the image is near the left side of the working area and find a place where it seems to be pretty much identical when overlayered (Doesn't give double lines). Find the correct places to crop off from there, it'll be too detailed and wall of textish to explain the whole process and technique.
Okay thanks for the help guys, but I guess it looks like I'll be starting from the top again, ah well. Thanks anyway!
I know that in potatochop you can offset an image by half it's length and width and get the lines, so you can remove the grid look.
