• VLC plays choppy *.mkv

I am unable to find out why VLC player will not play my *.mkv files. When I search Google, most people with the same issue have had responses like your PC is too slow, or you're missing _____ codec. I have all the suggested codecs, and my Windows Media Player plays the videos fine... Suggestions?
What about your GPU? I have a shuttle PC that often plays the .mkv files, and anything higher than 720p (like 1080) will have horrible playback.
VLC is a horrible player in general, use an alternative such as MPC, or even Windows Media Player with the proper DirectShow filters enabled
Use Windows media player 11 or MPC VLC is bad when it comes to MKV's i heard

But it's nothing to brag about obviously. I just like the simple gui it has, when compared to windows media player. But at least WMP works... Thanks guys.

It can't do 1080, and I'm pretty sure 720 is pushing it.
I've never had a problem with VLC until I try to play a file that my computer can't really handle.

I don't notice any issues with playback in WMP, I am just surprised VLC still has issues, I didn't think mkv was proprietary or whatever you call it. The notebooks just there to play videos & music, VLC seems to be what is letting me down. The notebook plays files fine [thus far] in windows media player. This isn't a discussion about my PC's specs, or lack of.
Oh, so everything else plays the 720 .mkv's fine?
Well I only have WMP 11 & VLC, maybe I'll check out windows media player classic, I would hope it's a little lighter. But yea I can watch the files, but not with VLC. Which isn't a big deal, I just wanted to see if I could get it sorted out.
VLC is Terribad. Get MPC.
VLC 1.1 Release Candidate includes MKV improvements. It's generally better than 1.0.5 in every way.
Personally I use VLC for any video, except HD video (where I use Media Player classic)
