http://news.yahoo.com/watch-what-happens-when-obama-picks-a-top-donor-as-ambassador-161931672.html
This is why a future president might finally do away with the practice of nominating a top political donor to be an ambassador. .... But a trip to the website of the Center for Responsive Politics that tracks campaign donations might help to explain how Tsunis — and not, say, a career diplomat — got the nod. In the 2012 cycle, Tsunis and his wife, Olga, are listed among the “top individual contributors” on the strength of having given $267,244, roughly 89% of which went to Democrats and 10% to Republicans. In all, heraised $988,550 for Obama and gave $300,000 to Democratic super PACs and $75,800 to the Obama Victory Fund. Tsunis became a Democrat in November 2009 — after giving $50,000 to Republican Sen. John McCain’s 2008 campaign. So it’s perhaps fitting that it was the tart-tongued Arizona senator’s questions that elicited his sloppy confirmation hearing performance last week (it starts at about 1:14 here) To recap: Tsunis described Norway as having a president (“apparently under the impression that the country is a republic rather than a constitutional monarchy,” as the Local Norway's News notes dryly). And he characterized the anti-immigration Progress Party as being among “fringe elements” who “spew their hatred” and have been denounced by the government. That prompted McCain’s disbelieving answer: “The government has denounced them? The coalition government — they're part of the coalition of the government.” McCain, already flummoxed by the apparent inability of Obama’s choice to be ambassador to Hungary to list strategic U.S. interests there, closed his questioning with a bit of sarcasm: “I have no more questions for this incredibly highly qualified group of nominees.” Obama did not start the practice of picking big donors to be ambassadors. And he (probably) won't be the last president to do so. But at a time when Americans mistrust their government and are cynical about their politicians, choices like these don't help.
"Worst 50K I've ever spent"
Got to love american politics, it just so clean and upstanding.
This is why you don't just nominate in your top contributors. He barely knows a thing about Norway and it shows.
I didn't know we could still just blatantly give someone power because they paid a lot anymore. Like, I thought there was supposed to be at least a semi-believable excuse.
Even though the progress party is the most extreme leftist party we have on the Norwegian parliament, they still aren't half as crazy as those bastards in congress.
Before anyone else says it: What the fuck was the Republican Party thinking when they qualified Sarah Palin to run with McCain?
Before anyone else says it: What the fuck was the Republican Party thinking when they qualified Sarah Palin to run with McCain?
They didn't vet her properly and when they found out it was a mistake it was to late.
Even though the progress party is the most extreme leftist party we have on the Norwegian parliament, they still aren't half as crazy as those bastards in congress.
Rightish you mean
I didn't know we could still just blatantly give someone power because they paid a lot anymore. Like, I thought there was supposed to be at least a semi-believable excuse.
I think that's just your cabinet if I remember rightly.
Rightish you mean
No, I am viewing the political axis from a different angle.
On the plus side this way at least they won't affect Norway too much, i like Norway it's a nice country and it should be left alone with no influence from the US.
That's why you don't get in the way of the McCain Train.
Haha this is pretty much me after being asked a question on an oral exam that I didn't know the answer to. :v:
How dare he besmirch the name of Norway by assuming it is better than it really is edit: ITT: people who think having a substantial portion of your government bigoted and being a constitutional monarchy = cool beans?
I think that the actual problem people are having is that you are seemingly defending absolutely ridiculous ignorance and completely obvious incompetence of this man to do the quite privileged job he is being chosen for. Regardless of the current Norway's government being arguably bad or good, it's like choosing an ambassador to Israel who would go on about how amazingly heartfelt and good the relation of Israeli government towards it's Palestinian population is. I still think it's bizarre that pretty much the only way to have a chance of getting elected in the US is if you're bankrolled by big companies and foreign entities.
No, I am viewing the political axis from a different angle.
And I'm not actually using English right now, you just think I am, so beware that anything I'm saying is extremely unlikely to mean what you think I'm saying!
It's like donating to be VIP on a GMod server.
How do you end up as the ambassador to a country you know nothing about?
How do you end up as the ambassador to a country you know nothing about?
Cha-ching.
Cha-ching.
Yeah, but why Norway? And you would think they would at least try and inform him about the politics of the nation before assigning him there anyway..
Yeah, but why Norway? And you would think they would at least try and inform him about the politics of the nation before assigning him there anyway..
he paid to be there. A job being an ambassador to a very stable and rich nation would kick ass and be really really desirable. You don't have to know jack shit about a country's government to enjoy your time there. [editline]26th January 2014[/editline] Ambassadors got like a base pay of a 150 grand, and they get allowances too. So the dood will probably get an allowance that pays for his rent/mortgage there, and a few more BS allowances that pay him stupid amounts of money because of Norway's higher costs of living.
good to know that the chicago influence is still there
videos gone, that's worrying.
