I haven't seen a Sopranos thread already and search is disabled so I thought I'd make one because this is probably one of the best shows ever. For those that don't know the Sopranos was a six-series drama running from 1999 to 2007. Warning: OP contains some spoilers, though I've kept it to minor ones i.e. I haven't mentioned if anyone dies. Hopefully many of you have watched this show already. Opening Sequence: What the show is all about: The Sopranos primarily follows Italian-American mobster Tony Soprano along with his New Jersey based mafia family and actual family (both direct and extended). It deals with Tony's attempts to both be a husband and father as well as a huge bad ass Al Capone type figure, and all the difficulties that brings. Characters: Tony Soprano Played by: James Gandolfini So the main character of the show is Tony Soprano. Despite claiming to be in 'waste management' although he kinda is, Tony starts out as capo in the mafia later becoming the de facto head of the New Jersey based crime family. Much of the show deals with the problems Tony encounters trying to run the family, e.g. internal problems such as unruly captains, problems with the FBI (those pesky RICO laws) and clashes with the famous New York mob families. He also has medical/psychological issues and a main aspect of the show is his relationship with his psychiatrist. I will go in to this more later. Tony really likes having sex with lots of women. And eating and drinking. Seriously so many scenes in the Sopranos feature him eating. Carmela Soprano Played by: Edie Falco Carmela is the wife of Tony Soprano. Carmela is strong and smart, and although Tony cheats on her and they argue a bit they are very much in love. Carmela knew the lifestyle she was marrying in to and has no issue with being the wife of a mobster, though she stays out of his business. Carmela is a housewife, though as the series goes on she worries about what she will do financially if Tony is killed/sent to jail and this becomes the basis of several arguments between the two. Eventually Carmela gets sick of being cheated on by Tony and tells him to stop. He doesn't, and they split up for a bit. Then get back together. The Kids Tony and Carmela have two kids together. On the left: Meadow, played by Jamie-Lynn Sigler On the right: AJ, played by Robert Iler Meadow is smart (and hot) and goes to college. She often clashes with her dad because of her liberal political stance where her dad is a racist conservative, e.g. he disapproves of her black/jewish boyfriend. AJ is a bit more dumb, and generally a disappointment to his dad because he is a bit of a lazy wimp, though Tony does not want him following in his footsteps. Livia Soprano Played by: Nancy Marchand Livia is Tony's mom, and their troublesome relationship is a major cause of Tony's psychological issues (panic attacks). Basically she is a huge bitch that makes Tony's life a misery. She even has a hit called on him. Corrado "Junior" Soprano Played by: Dominic Chianese Corrado/Junior/Uncle Junior is Tony's uncle, and also a mobster. Tony's relationship with his uncle is pretty rough, even being at war with each other at one point. I think it was because Tony didn't like his leadership or something (Junior was made boss in like season 2, and continues to remain don though Tony is the one running things). He eventually succumbs to alzheimers and is placed in care after accidentally shooting Tony during a 'senior moment'. Enough of the family, time to bring in some of the, er, family. The most prominent members of Tony's organisation in no particular order are: Christopher Moltisanti Played by: Michael Imperioli Chris is actually related to Tony. They refer to each other as Uncle and Nephew, though he is actually Carmela's cousin, or something. Anyway, he is sort of Tony's protégé, with Tony intending to make him boss one day. Tony loves Chris (in a manly way) but it's slightly one-sided as Chris resents Tony's position of authority over him, viewing him as ungrateful. Chris is also an on and off heroin addict and this annoys Tony a lot. His girlfriend, later fiancee, is Adriana, for most of the series anyway. I could give her her own character thingy but I can't be bothered. She's nice but she puts up with Chris hitting her. Chris can be an asshole and a bit dim sometimes. Paulie Gualtiere Played by: Tony Sirico Paulie is a captain in the mob and later becomes Tony's underboss. Although a ruthless killer he is also a source of humour in the show, often telling lots of jokes and long stories that Tony eventually finds annoying. Though he is very loyal and efficient, him and Tony do have their disputes. Silvio Dante Played by: Steven Van Zandt Silvio is Tony's capo and consigliere (advisor). He is one of Tony's most trusted friends and basically the main guy who Tony listens to when it comes to making decisions as boss. He also runs a strip club called Bada Bing which Tony often uses as an office. There's lots of other members of Tony's mafia I could mention but these are the main ones. There's a few other capos and lots of associates. I could also mention Johnny Sacramoni who is Tony's main connection in the New York mob. A major character who I've for some reason left to last is Tony's psychiatrist. Dr. Jennifer Melfi Played by: Lorraine Braco So yeah, Jennifer Melfi is Tony's psychiatrist and he sees her regularly throughout all 6 seasons of the show, always threatening to stop coming. The reason Tony comes to her is because of his depression and panic attacks, which Melfi believes are primarily a consequence of his relationship with his mom. Although sceptical and embarrassed at requiring therapy Tony keeps coming back and ends up desiring to bang Melfi but she turns him down. Yeah that's pretty much it. Some props goes to wikipedia. I may update if I can think of anything else. Basically if none of you have watched this show I recommend you do. The characters and storylines are really engrossing. If you're expecting a continual Scarface-esque blood bath then you're probably wrong, as I like to think The Sopranos represents a more realistic yet still totally awesome portrayal of the mafia. And it still has guns and killing and stuff. Here's a cool scene where Tony beats the crap out of someone:
It was cool, I just hate the ending. So fucking abr

Paulie Walnuts may be the most badass character in the history of television. I also love Silvio.
Great show, though I'm stuck on the end of series 4 due to a missing DVD. Anyone know of a place I can watch them?
Started on the show, and so far it's pretty great. The episode Boca is awful though. :byodood:
Do you mean awful as in content or in themes? I thought it was a great episode
I need to watch this series again, saw the first series as a kid and it blew my mind.
