• What is actually bad about Dell?

Hi, Dell have a very poor reputation amongst the apparently 'computer savvy' community, but nobody ever seems to justify their hate. What is wrong with Dell? I know their monitors are one of the best on the market, and I can't see any reason why their prebuilts are particularly worse than other prebuilts so... Anyone?
Prebuilts are just generally bad for personal use. Dell charge a lot too.

[editline]3rd May 2011[/editline] Also their laptops seem pretty good value for money compared to others
Their upgradability isn't good, their PSUs can barely power what's in the machine, they are poorly built (a case should not flex that much under it's own weight if you lift it up by a corner) they die usually just outside the warranty and if you need any replacement parts they charge you out of the ass for them.
I like my Dells. I've had the same one for 5 years and I only ever opened it once to put a graphics card in.
I've never had any problems with them but I've never had to return or deal with customers services
Price to quality ratio
Alienware are owned by Dell.
It's below absolute zero [editline]3rd May 2011[/editline]
Alienware are owned by Dell.
Inglish are spoken by you

Dell make some of the best displays.
Their case hardware is entirely proprietary. If a part breaks in the case, you have to buy a part from dell, or someone who specializes in manufacturing dell components. Their electronics are typically harvested from old machines, and are shoddy at best. They use low grade components wherever they can. I had a dell laptop for about three years. The screen literally broke off its hinges from normal use. They are a pain in the ass to do any hardware modifications, and you need to buy stupid "riser cards" to add any full size graphics cards in their standard tower units. Dell's servers are okay...but I'd rather have ProLiants, xServes and SuperMicros.
Dell Prebuilt PC's are USUALLY badly built, though on the execption they are good, and the laptops are good. Also Dell makes awesome screens etc.
It's below absolute zero [editline]3rd May 2011[/editline] Inglish are spoken by you
It's proper english, being that Alienware isn't one single entity. Anyway, dell computers are nothing but trouble. Their cases are usually a bitch to work with, they use bottom-of-the-barrel parts that, as stated before, die shortly after your warranty ends. I've owned a Dell for almost a year now and have had no issues with it. Was a little expensive, but has been worth the money so far.

depends on which computer you get. they're usually cheaper in the -$300 mark than making a custom built computer. My friend also has a dell studio 9000 which is about 1 1/2 years old and is running perfectly fine. it's got an i7 920 and a 5870, he also paid about 1,300; this was when the 5870 had just come out. haters gonna hate, but not all dells are bad.
They have to oddest computer cases ever. Not to mention their motherboards don't fit in any other cases.

And the majority of the Dell OptiPlex line. Those riser cards also don't come standard. You have to purchase them in addition to the machine.

Fuck Dell, too mainstream. [editline]3rd May 2011[/editline] " "
I like my Dells. I've had the same one for 5 years and I only ever opened it once to put a graphics card in.
so you don't perform basic maintenance on it clearly we are dealing with a pro here
Buy alienware
Waste of money

The kind that are 6 inches thick. My old dimension 4300S has one. Not mine, just a reference pic.
BTX Motherboards
I got an XPS 420 (:smugdog:) for 650euro. At the time it was a pretty fucking good deal. Quad Core Processor @ 2.6GHz 4GB RAM It (had) a 8800GTX Had a Blu-Ray drive and Bluetooth and Wireless Connectivity for internet all built in. It's well cooled and a great PC, as mentioned above i'm having a problem with the PSU being too weak is my only problem, the motherboard is fine though.
I always found Dells really ugly. :\
