Due to today being black-friday, I was able to pick up my very first plasma TV. It is the Samsung PN50C550 50 Inch 1080 p Plasma HDTV. I have it fully hooked up (along with an Xbox 360 and a PS3) and so far I'm very pleased with my purchase. The colors are the best i've ever seen.
I also picked up all three seasons of Mad Men on blu-ray for only $30. They look amazing on the TV also. My last TV was a 26 inch 720p TV, so this is a pretty big step up for me.
Here is a link to the Amazon page of the television.

I'm in need of tips and tricks from fellow plasma owners. A handy what not to do/what to do would be very much appreciated! Thank you everyone!
Here are a few pictures I took of it :]

Sweet. Is there much difference in quality from an LCD TV?
I'm jelly. Did/do you have an HDMI cable so you get the most out of it?
I love plasma. Mines only a 720p but I love it way more than my 1080p LCD from 2005 upstairs.

Yes I have it hooked up with an HDMI cable.
I've noticed the colors being alot more vivid and popping out more compared to my old LCD TV. This may just be due to the LCD TV being old and not that great though.
Why not LED?
LED TV has more colours but more expensive. Plasma is still a cheaper alternative
I thought you had created your first plasma based weapon.
Be sure not to play anything with a static HUD for too long, you might get burn in.
At least I think, not sure about newer plasma TVs
hey i got the same thing on black friday except mines a LCD.
i'm jelly too
Planning on buying a HDTV whenever I can though. Next purchase, I'd say.
Are plasma's the one who can burn-in?
Seriously, you don't wanna do that.
Supposedly the problem has nearly disappeared on later models.

What kind of money did you drop on this?!

What retards leaves the same picture on the hours and hours on end?
Some good old fashioned white noise should override any burnt in images anyway.

Think of some video games that have a HUD that rarely/never changes and it's always on. Like Oblivion or Fallout 3.
Also, you could pause it and forget to turn the TV off causing the pause screen to burn in.

Its static content like TV station logos, news tickers, HUD in games and stuff like that where the colors on the screen stay the same for a long period of time.
While permanent burn in is pretty hard to accomplish now-a-days, there is still some temporary burn in that can occur. Basically if you play a game for awhile sometimes the HUD will get a very faint image of it that stays on the screen. This is only noticeable if the screen is showing all black (such as a loading screen). You need to have the image static for a fairly decent amount of time though. Also it's not permanent, it'll go away if you watch a movie or whatever.
Most TV's (such as the one I bought) have burn in protection. If there is a still image for a while, the TV will adjust the whole image one pixel, removing the danger of burn in. It's completely unnoticeable.
edit: BmB, I purchased it for $800 (plus blu-rays and tax, came to about $900ish)
Good you bought a Plasma instead of the shitty LED-LCD.
Plasma TVs have always been something I looked at when we went into stores that sold them. It was interesting seeing just how different they are from a LCD TV, it can be quite noticeable at times, especially if you calibrate it for your room lighting.
Shame they are so expensive, even on sales they cost a hell of a lot more than I could be willing to pay for a marginal increase in quality for me.
Have fun with that thing, I know I like the 42" LCD my parents decided to buy, that TV looks higher end (and not just because the size/ it being plasma).
Does anyone have any suggestions on what settings I should put it on? I honestly think it looks amazing already, but apparently if you fiddle with the picture settings you're able to make it look better. Any suggestions/links?
75" here. :smug:
Oh, dumb ratings. I'm going to eat some jello.
50 inch full hd plasma for 800?
Lies.
Same TV as me.
Nice.
And you bought Mad Men, even nicer.
Wise consumer, OP.
Downside to plasma TV's is they're heavier and they use more electricity.
Waiting for boxing day here, cant wait until I get one.
Just looked at the price in denmark... :sigh:
Cheapest is 10,898 danish kr ($1,935)
Screw you America! :D
My question. WHERE DID YOU FIND ALL THE MAD MEN SEASONS FOR 30$?! You must share your source.
If you look at the pictures, they have a Best Buy sticker on them.

Bestbuy Black Friday sale :] I camped over night with a friend waiting at the store and there was only one of each. I was able to grab all three for $10 each. Downside? I found out you can just order them online for the same price. At least I saved on shipping right? Nah, free shipping available on their site also. Oh well, it gave me good memories!(Still available also)

BmB it's true, infact I put the link to the amazon sale in the OP. It's still on sale for $800. I also just found it on the Bestbuy website. If you have a store near you, you can order it online then choose in-store pickup to avoid shipping fees! (Plus you get it earlier :v: )
I got a question though. You know when you watch blu-rays on display at stores, everything seems to be going alittle faster than normal? Almost as if it's in fast motion. Apparently it has something to do with the refresh rate. How do I do this for my TV and ps3 which acts as my blu-ray player? Whenever I put in a bluray (i've only tried Mad Men and Transformers) it still just looks like the same refresh rate. Does anyone know?
