That's right, I'm visiting the land of funny accents and I want your suggestions on what I should see! I fly into London and I'll be doing the usual tourist thing there for a few days then I'll be traveling up the belly of her majesty's beautiful land to Newcastle, where I think it'll actually be more difficult to understand the locals than my Greek neighbors. :v: From Newcastle I'm going up into Scotland and after that I'll be back down to London. I would love to hear some suggestions on what I should do and see, I don't want to just do the typical tourist-y stuff; so feel free to fill me in on cool things to see/do!
go drink beer
I definitely plan to! There's a few pubs I already have in mind.
Go on the London underground and people watch.
I live in West London: that's nice I wouldn't recommend East London for obvious reasons but see a lot of the sights if you can (tube'll take you anywhere really) and just have fun! 10 days is a long time!
drink tea No, really. It's really nice here.
I definitely plan to drink tea, I've always enjoyed it already and make it fairly often rather than coffee.
Avoid Essex like the plague. Oh yeah, and tea is genuinely better here, the US has horrible tea from what I had over there.
And avoid the plague too, you never know when the black death is up for another round
When you go to Scotland, don't go to Glasgow.
When you go to Scotland, don't go to Glasgow.
Duly noted :v: I'm actually going to Edinburgh.
Avoid the people who wear cheap hoodies and tracksuits who yell at everyone.
Pepper;38012138']Avoid the people who wear cheap hoodies and tracksuits who yell at everyone.
Yeah, Chavs are not fun to ask for directions :(
Go the pub for beer, but make sure you try a good meal in a dining pub as well. Good lord if you find a decent pub that makes great food it's glorious.
Try our mead, it's fucking delicious. Oh, and there are castles everywhere, if you're a big fan of looking at derelict buildings.
I definitely plan to check out some castles; I love old shit.
Depending on how long you're staying in Newcastle, there's a decent amount of stuff do to - For sciency stuff, the Centre of Life can be pretty good depending on what they're showcasing at the time. - Museum wise, Newcastle has two - the Discovery Museum which is decent, but not particularly exciting regarding local history mind. Either way it's a solid place to visit if you want to see some neat engineering stuff. For your more ancient history stuff, the Hancock Museum is pretty solid for that. - If you enjoy shopping on a mass scale and you have time, the Metro Centre (formerly Europes largest shopping centre) will cover you pretty well. It's just over the river and the 100, or any "toonlink" bus will take you there and back. For something more centralized to Newcastle itself, Eldon Square will do just fine. - Interested in typical boring new-age art? The Baltic has you set - The Nightlife in Newcastle is pretty decent, although it can get rowdy. These days most of the action goes down at and around The Gate. - We also have Newcastle Keep, but it's a tad boring and dry admittedly. If you want to go for some more ancient history and like your Romans, you can visit Segedunum in Wallsend where it's literally the end of Hadrians Wall. It's a decent place and they've excavated a fair few ruins there as well. Feel free to ask more about Newcastle if you want to know!
Go to bromley and laugh at anyone wearing a tracksuit. Also come to plymouth. We're awesome.
I wonder if I'll run into any FPers. I'd love to awkwardly stand around and stare at each other.
I wonder if I'll run into any FPers. I'd love to awkwardly stand around and stare at each other.
There are quite a few in London and I think a lot of them enjoy meeting people. If you like old shit, take a look around these sites when you're planning where to go: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/ http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/
I went there, and everyone drove on the left.
I went there, and everyone drove on the left.
I bet you did too, didn't you! You sheep.
go to a place called the blues kitchen in camden for a night out www.theblueskitchen.com/ its pro as fuck
Come to West London. It's nice over here. Definitely visit Central London but don't get sucked into the tourist bullshit over there. Just don't go to South London.
Also remember to visit Bengley for rape and 'artistic' photographs.
Here I am waiting to board. Wish me luck and all that, there's lots of other English folk around me; it's weird being surrounded by the English language again.
okay, London! places you should definitely try to visit 1. westminster! - you can't have a trip to london without seeing big ben and parliment. turn around and you'll see the london eye too (which i hear is a good experience!) 2. trafalgar square - nelson's column, the lions and some fountains, a nice place to drop by 3. camden - london's 'alternative' area, full of punk types, hippy types, all types. try to get down for a wander through the horse market, that's pretty cool. lots of things your girlfriend will probably like to look at! 4. leicester square - there's always something going on down in leicester square. it's where the movie premieres are held, and there's a lot of places to eat around there 5. covent garden - lovely, lovely place. shops to look around, food to be bought, and nearly always some form of street entertainment going on. it's fun! if you like art there's the tate modern - http://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-modern as the name suggests it's a contemporary art gallery, one of my favs (but not for everyone!). there's a damien hirst exhibition on atm which i highly recommend, if you're interested in his stuff, it's about £14). i think they also have some picasso there at the moment? the V&A (victoria and albert museum) - http://www.vam.ac.uk/ which has a lot more traditional art and stuff, but it's got some nice stuff. it's also *massive* so if you're in the area and fancy passing through it's worth a look at. it's also right next to the science museum and natural history museum which i also recommend (further down) the national gallery - http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/ lots of old paintings of royalty and all that, which doesn't really float my boat, but there are some great exhibitions that are held there. it's also in trafalgar square, which is somewhere you should definitely visit if you like science and history and nature and stuff the natural history museum - http://www.nhm.ac.uk/ very cool place. big ol' dinosaur skeleton in the auditorium, though it might be a replica... but it's free entry and well worth a look! the science museum - http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/ awesome place. full of really cool stuff like planes from the war and rockets that have been into space and a load of other stuff, definitely try to make it here! the imperial war museum - http://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-london i've not yet made it here, but if you're interested in the war, i have heard it's a good museum london zoo - http://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/ everybody loves the zoo!! but it's a bit pricey iirc other cool places borough market - good ol' historical london food market. sells a lot of ingredient and specialist foods, but also plenty of ready to eat places too, so if you fancy some paella or a cornish pasty or panini, head down there (it's lovely) hyde park - massive park in central london. if the weather's good you could have a picnic, and maybe hire a couple of boris bikes and have a ride around brick lane - if you fancy a curry one night, without a doubt this is the place you'll want to be. a whole road pretty filled with curry houses oxford circus - shopping central! lots of flagship stores are here, so it's a nice place to look around. harrods - http://www.harrods.com/content/the-store/visiting-the-store/ - reeks of london, definitely worth a look at! chinatown - speaks for itself places to drink! - they won't be the cheapest, but they should be an experience slim jims - wonderful old american style rock'n'roll pub, angel the blues kitchcen - boring until the live band comes on, rock'n'roll and blues and everything. good atmosphere once it gets going the faltering fullback - lovely place. has this crazy 3 tiered back garden terrace thing, the inside is very traditional and then they have a kitchen which serves you amazing authentic thai food! love this place 55 bar - cocktail bar in camden, happy hour means 2 cocktails for £8 (and you won't beat that anywhere). tasty and good location powder keg dimplomacy - somewhere i've not yet been but it looks very interesting! venn street records - have been recommended this recently but still haven't visited it myself
They don't sell pens in Islington, that's all I know about London
Clifton Suspension Bridge. It is pretty cool. And if you are in Northern Ireland, stop by the Giant's Causeway.
I think you're gonna miss some nice parts of England and skip between the ones with the biggest morons living in it (London, Newcastle, Scotland) What about the places with personality? Come to Yorkshire on your way :)
