This question got posed to the class for homework on our schools online forum, and it got me thinking. Personally, I think yes. Some people might argue that we tried to preserve American lives by staying out of it, but what is an American life compared to a British one? A German one? An Italian one? Your nationality does not determine how much or less of a human being you are. Everyone fighting on those battlefields had emotions, memories, a past, people they loved, and perhaps died for. They weren't faceless, soul-less statistics as popular media depicts them. They are people, going through the same experiences as any other person here. If we were to involve ourselves earlier, a great many lives would be saved, lives that could of shaped the world today. War is so horredously marginalized with our Call of Duties and our WWII films. Think about the idea of war for a second: Hundreds of thousands, even millions, are sent to their death, and for what? Land? Resources? Even worse, beliefs? These are people with lives, ideas, families, and real actions with real impacts on our lives, even if to a small degree, and they cease to exist.
Thoughts, etc.
Does it matter? we won
No.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it their plan to stay out of shit like that?
No.

It was, but think of the lives that we could of saved if the war ended earlier.
It was their plan to stay out of shit but their oil embargo on Japan was pretty provocative, some would say decisive in their declaration of war upon the US.
I'm almost positive that the US was following a policy of isolationism following WW1.
They were. Most democratic nations are isolationist to some degree. It's a pretty bad trait as a country though.

It's true, they didn't want to rub their noses into anything happening overseas
If you want to argue saving lives, look at the atomic bombs.
Was it really worth causing the wanton destruction, misery and torment to end a war?
You could argue yes, because it brought about a quicker halt to the proud Japanese and kept up from using our back up plan, a full-scale invasion.
You could also argue no; that a with the right tactics and both military and political maneuvering, we could have avoided the nuclear horrors.
It all really boils down to opinion. Don't pick which one you like the best, pick which one you can back up the best and with the most info. That's what teachers want to see in your paper: solid, organized support.
roosevelt was scared of nazis, nazi germany had the biggest and best army at that time
When we didn't jump in they bitched to get in.
When we do jump in they bitch saying they got it.
I'm almost positive that the US was following a policy of isolationism following WW1.
That's what I was going for.
It's all over now so it doesn't matter.
roosevelt was scared of nazis, it had the biggest and best army at that time
It certainly didn't have the biggest army. Neither the best. They were victor only over Poland, the low countries and France. Their broad tactics were very good and they had good battle tactics but ultimately their armies were far overstretched and the US army far outmatched them in conflict when it did ensue.
The US had invested money into the Allies and we only got involved when we were worried of losing our investments. Everything is about money and war costs TONS of money, which is part of why we didn't get involved till later.
No, Because the US is the best example of stupid. Cant even explain how stupid the US is. They have mastered stupid fucking stupid. Congratulations. GAME OVER U.S. OF ASS.
PS: Fucking Fuck.

wat
I mean, we started getting into the war when we had government policies like 'Destroyer-Bases Deal' or Cash+Carry and Lend+Lease. Ya we didn't start fighting initially, but that was cause public sentiment was still against it.
You have to remember a central question of the war before getting started was who to side with.

canada is just a big hat deal w/ it.
It's true, they didn't want to rub their noses into anything happening overseas
If the US signed into the League of Nations, the whole war could've been averted altogether.
League of Nations was pretty weak, dunno if that would have changed anything
League of Nations was pretty weak, dunno if that would have changed anything
A huge factor of it being weak was the fact that the US wasn't in it. Wilson wanted to create it and they did, but then the US decided "fuck that" and they never joined. If the US joined, it might've had the power it needed.
But who's to say. We don't know. It might've failed anyway due to the economic collapse that followed.
But if they were in it, they would've joined the war much sooner than they did.
No, they were perfect cannon fodder during D-Day.
Edit;
Oh and fun fact, George Bush's (senior) father sold the fuel to germany that powered the bombings of england.
Awesome eh?
Herp derp america is stupid for stepping in and helping save England and France.
Herp derp america is stupid for stepping in and helping save England and France.
We certainly helped but we didn't single handedly come in with jet packs and lasers and save the day with no effort.
Herp derp america is stupid for stepping in and helping save England and France.
Herp derp America England and France are stupid for beating the shit out of germany after WW1. thus causing WW2..
After we declared war on Japan, Germany declared war on us. It was in Europe's favor for the allies to put pressure on Germany's army (hence the invasion of Africa and France) to relieve pressure on the Russians. So no.

how does it feel living in a country we could wipe off the face of the earth in 20 minutes

You seem a few minutes overdue with the wiping out of Osamas country.

And I think if USA attacked Canada, then Canada would end up burning down the White House again.
From what I know about WW2, we came in to save Europe from the Soviets, not the Nazi's.
The Soviets saved Europe from Germany and the U.S. saved Europe from the Soviets.
America actually did relatively little(compare to the Soviets) in the fight against the Nazi's.
