Paris suspended the delivery of the two Mistral warships last year after Europe imposed sanctions on Russia over its support of militants in east Ukraine
UNIAN: France may scuttle at sea two newly built Mistral-class helicopter carrier assault ships it built for Russia if agreement on their delivery cannot be reached, French newspaper Le Figaro has reported.
Citing French officials, the newspaper said Paris was seriously considering the option of scuttling the ships if the contract with Russia was terminated.
The modern ships were built in France but according to Russian standards and specifically for Russian military helicopters, and the cost of converting them for use by the French military or other countries' forces would run into hundreds of millions of euros, the newspaper said, citing experts.

The Mistral helicopters carriers which were supposed to be delivered to Russia are causing the French a headache. However, rather than handing them over, the French government may send them to the bottom of the sea, if the contract is canceled.
France was supposed to have received €1.12 billion ($1.25 billion) from Moscow for the sale of two state-of-the-art warships. However, under pressure from the US and EU the sale was postponed, perhaps indefinitely.
An article in Le Figaro on Wednesday says that Paris may have to resort to sinking the helicopter carriers if the government refuses to honor the contract and deliver them to Russia. The first vessel, the Vladivostok, should have been handed over in November, but French President Francois Hollande said it would be postponed “until further notice.”
More like "Hey France, fuck your money then".
Well, we are getting those 1.1 billion back instead soo... France can do whatever they want, i am sure it's all better then keep wasting money on securing and sustaining ship at bay.
I am glad all the hard work at manufacturing those ships paid off.
I'm surprised they would rather sink them over salvaging what parts & materials they can from the ships
the russians probably have all the tech and expertise of the project already though, so it's not a total loss for them
Wow, what a waste of a fine ship.
Wow, what a waste of a fine ship.
Here's the thing, it would be too expensive to adopt ship for anything else but what is what build for - russian tehc and russian heli's. soo only hope they can get is to sold it to someone who is ready to went through rebuilding if needed himself, doing that is rather costy.
Again, they could have deconstructed entire thing and salvage parts for other uses but nooo
This is an attempt to show contract fuck up as bold political move, while it's clearly not.

looks like it may just get sold
Russia says it is not opposed to France selling the vessels to a third party. Le Figaro says that potential clients include,“Canada, a northern country and Egypt.”
Surprised you still have internet considering you live in Russia.

I doubt Canada would be buying it. We can barely keep our Sea Kings in the air, let alone on a ship.
Why don't they use it themselves?

Seriously, can you not read? Forth sentence of OP
Why don't they use it themselves?
Read the article, it would be too expansive to convert to French military standards.
Sell it to ISIS, I'm sure they'd love a boat.

Indeed, even Greenpeace won't bitch about sinking a boat full of ISIS.

Give it to us, we're close enough to russia
So what they're saying is that French helicopters can't fit on Russian helipads? No wonder Napoleon failed.
Give it to us, we're close enough to russia
But you don't have enough helicopters, dude.
Seriously though, i hear that Canada and Egypt have expressed their interest in buying these ships, so it's kind of surprising they may sink them instead of making some money. This may not be correct though, since at least Canada obviously uses nato millitary standards on their ships.
Gut them, convert them to hospital ships and dock them somewhere in Africa or south america, they're helicopter aircraft carriers so they already have the empty hangar

1.1 billion roubles, so about $20 then.
I wish they could be repurposed for humanitarian duties for some international agency, like UN or OSN. For instance they could be used for patrolling the Mediterranean sea to save African refugees and stuff (lets not turn this into debate if these should be let into europe or not, it could still ship them back to Africa).

About $22,000,000
The real number is pathetic enough dude

it's rather costly to use a goddamn carrier for simple patrolling.

[del]That's dirt cheap for a military ship. They got a hell of a deal.[/del]

Well I know but just scuttling it sounds like a horrible shame.

Is it bad that reminded me of a contest from Taco-Bell offering 1,000,000 Pesos as a grand prize, which came out to $88,000?
I don't know why, we're talking about foreign currencies and exchange rates.
Jesus some currency is inflated as fuck.
Just fyi, usually these days it's standard procedure to gut the ships of anything useful before scuttling them. So unless France has a steel shortage, they'd be much more useful as a reef than being sold to a country that will never use them, or to one that will use them to oppress their neighbors.
Sink em'
I also completely forgot about scuttling for reefs, that's actually pretty productive. Combine them with artificial coral that have been made from parts from real coral to help kick start coral reef growth.
Stuff like copper wiring, electrical components, hardware, etc are taken out because copper is actually toxic to reefs. So all that would be left would be the steel skeleton. That is unless France just does it on a whim and sinks the whole thing to be spiteful, but that would be stupid.
