Staring as a Valet Driver on Tuesday...what to expect?
26 replies, posted
First thread in a while. I recently got a job as a Valet Driver in the Baltimore, Md area. I start at a simple place on Tuesday, but during the weekend will probably be moving into the inner harbor. I know my pay is Minimum, plus whatever tips I get. Anyone have any experience as a driver and what to expect? Yes I know how to drive stick, big trucks, and high end cars. No worries on that part.
Well crud. I meant starting. Make your jokes and whatever.
floor it

If they drive anything like the Vegas valet's there, you will have the time of your life.
I think if you're just nice to people's cars, you will be fine. Don't be surprised if someone gets pissed if you mess up though. And if you do scratch something, fess up to it. A car runner at a dealership once scratched my mirror and didn't bother owning up to their mistake. I didn't notice something was wrong until I got in the truck and noticed the mirror was pointing at the rear passenger window. I'm sure that dealership hates me now.

Good or bad?

Good. The Valet's at the MGM haul ass but they have this honking code to notify other drivers where they are and if it's okay to back out and stuff...

Depends on how your life insurance is set up.
I'd expect some cars.
You are going to love those tips you get. Any jobs with tips is great really. Valet in particular. You'll be getting a lot of people with money coming in and that means higher tip.
I didn't know you could get a job staring at others as a valet driver

Think the tips will be good enough if I'm working around 4-5 days a week, 7 hours a day to look into a small-ish apartment? I'm not entirely sure about the amount of tips, but I know apartments run about $600 a month around here in a not too horrid area.

Act smart, don't lean, don't count your tips in public, don't ask or beg for tips (it's a given really tips come and go, you get tight ass rich guys and generous old guys)
Also, act extra nice to the guys who check their mileage as they get out because those are the guys that like to revel in their importance over you.
It's not that bad work really, best of luck.

Where in the Baltimore area? I'm 15 minutes south near Columbia, but I go up to the city from time to time. If you're in the inner harbor, you will make ridiculous bank.
