As CBS2’s Matt Kozar reported, investigators said the boy — identified as Marcos Castillo — was with his friends when he fell seven stories down the shaft in an abandoned building at 100 Castleton Ave., in the Tompkinsville section of Staten Island. The building had once been a hospital, but has been abandoned for 36 years, officials said. “It’s very dangerous,” said FDNY Battalion Chief James Boylan. “Nobody should be in there.” The FDNY was called to the scene around 4:40 p.m., and Castillo was unconscious when they arrived, officials told CBS2. Boylan said when firefighters also found signs of forced entry when they arrived.
Guess its not really surprising that doing something dangerous could lead to this happening.
“They’re pretty much going in; they’re doing drugs,” said Justin Juarez. “If it’s abandoned, obviously it’s dangerous and you shouldn’t be in there.”
So were they really urban exploring or were they just getting high??
I hope this doesn't sensationalize urbexing and ruin it for the rest of us.
I hope this doesn't sensationalize urbexing and ruin it for the rest of us.
Surely this kinda stuff must happen every now and then right? I don't think it's gonna ruin it for anybody except that maybe the kids in that area can't go to that hospital.
I hope this doesn't sensationalize urbexing and ruin it for the rest of us.
Well its already illegal to sneak onto private property and go into condemned buildings in most places...
Entering an elevator is just about the dumbest thing you can do while exploring abandoned facilities, especially that fucking high up. They're dangerous enough as it is with crumbling ceilings, rotting wood floors, wasp nests and animals like badgers or wild dogs.
Urbex is just a little too dangerous without enough payoff imo. I can understand if it really is your thing but from what I've seen 90% of the places you go are crap and full of graffiti and asbestos and meth hobos.
Like with professional show wrestling, the risks are real.
Urbex isn't so bad, but rooftopping is the amount of instagram kiddies trying to outdo one another with hanging off the roof shots is nuts
Urbex isn't so bad, but rooftopping is the amount of instagram kiddies trying to outdo one another with hanging off the roof shots is nuts
Hanging off the roof? As in, grabbing onto the edge and hanging? I thought only master street workouters and parkour athletes do that - because of trained strength. Heck, i can do quite a couple of pull ups and even a pair of muscle ups on a bar, and even I would never believe to be able to help myself back up.
I hope this doesn't sensationalize urbexing and ruin it for the rest of us.
just blame it on drugs instead of urbex :v:
It's not dangerous at all if you know what you're doing, come properly prepared and equipped and don't do anything stupid
False, there's an inherent danger in going into condemned or abandoned buildings; no amount of preparation or experience will remove that.
What is stopping the local municipal authority from demoing these abandoned buildings? Lack of infactstructure budget?
What is stopping the local municipal authority from demoing these abandoned buildings? Lack of infactstructure budget?
Costs money, contracting, cleanup and all associated costs. Another big reason is asbestos; since you can't just demolish with all the asbestos on the building.
Dont fuck around with elevator shafts kids. Arguably the most dangerous place you can find in any building.

“They’re pretty much going in; they’re doing drugs,” said Justin Juarez. “If it’s abandoned, obviously it’s dangerous and you shouldn’t be in there.”
So were they really urban exploring or were they just getting high??
That quote screams "damn kids these days doing weed needles and fucking in the bushes." From the article, there is no evidence of the kid doing drugs and his statement is baseless. Not all kids who do stupid things also do drugs.
well that wasn't very smart at all, its illegal to enter them for a good reason.
We have an old "factory" that has extensive tunnels beneath them. Really common for idiots to get in there and fuck around. Cant do anything about it because its private property still. Sucks.
It's not dangerous at all if you know what you're doing, come properly prepared and equipped and don't do anything stupid
Nothing is dangerous if you don't do anything stupid tho
HE WAS PUSHED
There is a reason man was built with two legs and not a set of wings. Yet he still insists on building large flying contraptions to strap himself into. There is a reason man is only capable of running 14mph-22kmh, yet he still continues to build faster and sleeker machines to strap himself into. Let people do as they wish. It is not your call. It is very unfortunate the kid had to die for his adventures, but such is the way of being born on Earth. You live. You experience. You die. Sometimes earlier than we would like.

At least he died doing what he loved.
RIP this poor soul. I'm deathly afraid of heights, I can't even imagine what falling to your death would be like.
At least he died doing what he loved.
Did he love falling?
So were they really urban exploring or were they just getting high??
Mutually exclusive?
If people wanna put themselves at risk, so be it. I can see the appeal in Urbex although every abandoned building I can think of around here is full of graffiti and probably meth addicts. I am against stopping people from doing something just because it's risky for them.

The videogame "Condemned: Criminal Origins" completely steered me away from even considering urban exploration.
That hospital needs to be torn down already, the amount of injured people i've had to bring to the hospital from there is getting ridiculous, this was a tragedy that was inevitable.
Like someone said earlier, it's really easy to avoid the danger of Urbex if you know what your doing. Seriously, danger can be pretty minimal if you choose the right site, or at least know about the site. The right equipment and the right skills can help but just simply choosing a good site can reduce most of the danger. Going up into a 7 story + Hospital and exploring a fucking elevator shaft is not something I'd recommend.
