At least 38 people were killed when a small passenger plane crashed near the Iranian capital Tehran, state media reports.
The aircraft, which was heading to the eastern city of Tabas, went down after take-off in a residential area near Mehrabad airport on Sunday morning.
Passengers included at least five children, the aviation authority said.
Iran has suffered a series of plane crashes, blamed on its ageing aircraft and poor maintenance record.
Initial reports said all passengers on board the plane had been killed, but state media later reported that some passengers had been injured and transferred to hospital.

So many plane crashes recently. RIP.
There's always plane crashes, especially smaller ones, now they are just reported so much more with all this plane shit going on

Yes there are air accidents all the time. However, they often result in zero fatalities.
A plane crash killing nearly everyone on board is a highly unusual occurence, which is why it seems strange that there have been so many this year.

I can't remember hearing about this many plane crashes last year (yet we know that by this time last year we'd had roughly the same number of air disasters), I think the media is just reporting any they find because that's the trend right now
RIP, it shouldn't have required taken lives before someone investigated the state of these planes
It might be a bit too far-fetched to say plane crashes are as common as car crashes, but they do occur much more often than most people think.
Not to belittle the tragedy. My condolences to the affected families.
Not that surprising. One of my friends (her parents are from Iran) flew with an Iranian airline, and it was basically the shittiest plane ever, apparently. They're mostly using old Soviet planes, iirc.

seems pretty standard so far
Here's why this seems like a big year for plane crashes.

There's nothing that unusual about the number of crashes, or the number of deaths when taken individually. Death rate is a little higher than the last few years, but not much higher than the years before it. That's why you might say "nah nothing unusual about this year, just the media reporting on it more"
The difference comes when you compare the number of deaths to the number of crashes.

The average number of deaths per crash is way way higher than it has been - meaning there have been more high-fatality plane crashes this year than in a typical year.
In fact, so far this year has a much higher death-per-crash rate than any other year in history.

I used data from the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents and gathered them into this spreadsheet.

Thank you for that.
High quality post.

if we're going to take into account all deaths cause by plane accidents then 2001 should be much higher
[editline]10th August 2014[/editline]
but that was an abnormal occurance and it makes sense to not include it
Thank you for that.

yes maybe now the "this is totally normal its just the media" people will shut up

The figures do include 9/11 but only the passengers, not the people in the buildings

ah, okay, i was wondering if that was the case
The pilot said "Iran outta gas"
Betting the Iranian opposition will say this was a "message from god" amid the nuclear negotiations.
