AMD did make quite a splash by launching the first ever DirectX 11-ready Radeon HD 5800 series GPUs, and the Radeon HD 5870 has also helped the company to retrieve the performance crown of single-GPU graphics card by beating NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285. Apparently, the dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 is something which deserves even higher expectations.
Our fellow site Alienbabeltech has just posted the first pictures and benchmarks of Radeon HD 5970, but the performance screenshots have been cleared up a bit later, due to the pesky NDA, as you can expect.
Radeon HD 5970 features a very long PCB which measures 13.5 inch (i.e.34.29cm), making it to be the longest ever. The reviewer actually had some problems fitting it into a full-sized tower case like the Antec 1200. According to them, the fan worked at 4700RPM under load, not unexpectedly, too much noise as well.
the cover looks nice but the jesus christ the length.
He had trouble putting it in a antec 1200?
:wtc:
Why do they have single pcb? why not 2 on top of each other or does that make more heat/cost more?
Holy shit that's awesome
[editline]02:17PM[/editline]
I can already see myself cutting hole into case to fit it in.
looks sexy as hell in the case.
Why not X2? That naming worked so well the past two times, why change it now?
-cocks-
I just moved my hard drive bay up in preparation for this.

Sweet mother, an X2 of one of those could restart a dead planet.
imagine the framerates
~go ati woo~
I just moved my hard drive bay up in preparation for this.
Although I might skip it and wait for an X2 of some sort.
I thought this was the x2 of the 5870?
~go ati woo~
Shut up
i love nvidia it owns ati
i thought they were making one of those.
I thought this was the x2 of the 5870?
I thought so too but now I'm not so sure, I heard early reports that this only gets about ~10% more performance than the 5870. Can't be sure on that, we'll see soon enough though.
There was speculation that these upcoming HD 5900 series could be a chip refresh just like HD 4890 was to HD 4870. But our sources tell us that ATI has decided to drop the “X2” nomenclature and its upcoming dual GPU-on-a-PCB cards. The card that was supposed to be HD 5870X2 will now likely be called the HD 5970 and the HD 5850X2 will probably be called the HD 5950. These cards will be much like their older brothers, the HD 4870-X2 and the HD 3870-X2, featuring two GPUs on a single PCB and employing onboard crossfire support. They will undoubtedly take their place as the top two performing cards in ATI’s evergreen lineup upon release.
there you go
i hope that is correct
I'm sure it is. Its a okay naming scheme, but I'm used to the X2 stuff. Its fool prooth hehlol
Holy shit, I thought that this would be my upgrade before I saw the length, this will not fit in my case...

In the picture that shows the back of the PCB you can see there are two GPU sockets. That's what those metal X shaped things are.

ah. i'm an idiot.
A external graphics processing box or something will soon be needed. Seems like they just get bigger and bigger
that's too big

for my case

Exactly this. Fitting an 11" card into my 16" case was already a stretch, but a 13" is impossible...
Thinner than my 9800GX2 but fucking christ that's long.
Jeez and I thought the 4870 was big.
I got a question about the 5970.
Can it play games full screen across dual monitors?
I'm tired of only being able to use one of my monitors for gaming.
This will fit fine into my Dell
:smug:

Yes with Eyefinity

Why, because nathaz seems to contradict himself with multipersonal fanboyism?
Personally, it looks like they slightly bent the card to fit in perfectly in the case
I misunderstood that post but I got a lot of agrees so it looks like it was a pretty misunderstandable post. soz dumdydum
That card is long. Way too long in my opinion, then rather make a Dual slot card like the 7950 Gx2
Holy Hell. Cases are now going to advertise "Radeon HD 5970 Compatible".
