well afaik the mumbai shootings started similarly, I remember reading at like 22:00 on google news from local sources about a fire and gunfire coming from the hotels, then next morning it went massive on international news.
I'm really close to military airport Volkel, and suddenly two jetfighters came screaming over my workplace. It was pretty cool.
