I built my computer last December and except for one hiccup (OS randomly got corrupted or something through a Windows Update and I was forced to reinstall) a few months ago it's been working perfectly fine up until pretty recently. Lately my computer has been running incredibly slowly for no apparent reason. I defrag very frequently, use CCleaner at least once a week, barely have that much stuff on my HDD, and I haven't even been pushing computing/graphical power lately due to school and having less time for gaming and whatnot. Now my computer can't handle opening two small applications at once without freezing for ten minutes, let alone properly allow one application to work normally. For example, tonight I have to type a long report for one of my classes and it took literally fifteen minutes to open my saved file from yesterday and create a new document. Eventually it just froze and I was forced to end the Word process manually in task manager.
What's the problem with my computer and how can I fix it? I can't get my homework done because a quad core computer with high-end graphics can't load MS Word.... That's a big problem, especially since I'm generally a very good student and never have to make excuses for assignments.
I typed all of this on my iPod, by the way.
Thanks a bunch to anybody who can help.
Boot up in safemode and install Malwarebytes, then run a scan. (www.malwarebytes.org)
You probably have some sort of malware.

I've been scanning for the past 20 minutes and it hasn't found anything. I already had Malwarebytes installed and just scanned last weekend actually, but it didn't find anything then. While it doesn't hurt to try again, I don't think the results will be different. What else could it be?
Is it slow in safemode?
Is it slow in safemode?
Not really, but it's hard to tell with the programs I usually try to open since I did safe mode without network so I can't open firefox or anything, plus when I tried to open Word it said my license expired... which better go back to normal once I reboot out of safe mode... 46 minutes in and no objects found infected.
Edit: I just tried opening firefox and when I tried closing it after getting the "not connected to Internet" message it lagged for about a minute before closing it and going back to the Malwarebytes window, if that means anything.
Get hijackthis, post the outcome here. Will tell you what you broke.

How do I post the results? What info should I show to tell whether something specific can be found wrong?

It should create a text file somewhere. You'll probably need to paste the whole content of the text file unless you know what you're looking for.

I ended up finding out what was wrong while FP was down yesterday. I uninstalled my antivirus (avast free) in Safe Mode and sure enough when I rebooted everything was back to normal. I suspected it was the antivirus since the last program I installed was that, since it started giving me the "Your system is no longer secured" bullshit and usually re-installing it fixes that.
So... any ideas for a better/new free antivirus that's not going to fuck my computer?
Comodo. (If you aren't a dumb ass and know how to set things up correctly)
Actually, fuck that. Install Comodo and I'll help you set it up over TeamViewer. :buddy:
Comodo's decent, I had it for 3 months or so, uninstalled it yesterday in favor of going back to MSE.
Free: MSE (Or Avast if you don't like MSE for any reason)
Paid: NOD32 (or Kaspersky if you dont like NOD32 for any reason)
[editline]05:40PM[/editline]
and MBAM for back up.

I've never heard of Comodo before, but is it any more difficult to set up than any other antivirus? Like does it work better if you change certain settings? Otherwise I think I can figure it out. (don't have teamviewer)

If you don't set it up correctly you'll end up with a lot of annoying popups. But I don't suggest it if you aren't that tech savvy. So if all you want is an antivirus (No firewall or HIPS) go for MSE.
I just tried installing MSE, and when it started updating I got this:

I clicked help but couldn't find a way to search for the error code it gave me, and each time I try to update it again the same thing happens. Malwarebytes says there aren't any infected files or anything, but could this mean I have some kind of virus/malware/etc.?
Try scanning with Hitman Pro: http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro
If that doesn't bring anything you probably don't have any type of virus. Unless it's a new rootkit or something. Are you sure your firewall allows MSE to connect to the internet?
get yourself AVG Internet Security, pm me when done and ill give u a key

Don't have a firewall so I can't imagine what the problem could be.

No warez allowed here dude.
@OP I don't know what it could be then. As I said, try scanning with Hitman Pro. I gotta go to bed so hopefully someone else can help you.

I scanned with it and nothing came up. This is all really weird. Thanks for your help regardless.
In my opinion, MSE sucks, use AVG Free or Comodo.
If you don't want the hassle of setting up your antivirus, I'd go for AVG. I use Comodo, but it's caused issues for me in the past. AVG just tends to harass you to buy it after a few months in my experience.
Hmm...This happened to me once. I couldn't even move files to my other HDD >_>. I had to reformat. The only way you could probably back up is if you connected your 1 TB HDD to another comp that has sata support. Some things you could try before attempting that are.
*Assuming you still have thermal paste*
A.Reinstall processor, if done while it's powered on, it resets all mobo settings as far as I know.
2. Clear CMOs button on mobo
3. Unplug and replug sata connectors on harddrive
If none work, only option is to format \;
