Today's events to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall will range from solemn reflection to high kitsch celebration. Memorials are planned for the 136 people who died when they tried to cross the border while – in an event reminiscent of International It's a Knockout – 1,000 foam dominoes placed along the wall's route will be tipped over. Dancers dressed as angels will descend from prominent buildings. At around 2pm, Angela Merkel, the first Germany leader to grow up in the communist east, will cross the Bornholmer Street bridge, where the first border post opened on the evening of 9 November 1989. She will be accompanied by the former Soviet president Michael Gorbachev and Poland's former opposition leader and ex-president Lech Walesa. At around 6pm, Daniel Barenboim, who was in Berlin to witness the events of 1989, will conduct his Staats Kapelle orchestra on an outdoor stage at the Brandenburg Gate. From 6.30pm, world leaders including Merkel, Gordon Brown, the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, and the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, will give speeches. Afterwards, the dominoes will be toppled and there will be fireworks at the Brandenburg Gate at 8pm. To mark the anniversary, the Guardian has put together a special Berlin Wall package including a series of videos, audio from those whose lives were affected and interactive guides. • The historian and columnist Timothy Garton Ash remembers the mood in the German capital after the wall fell. "As as symbol, it lives on, above all, as a image of peaceful liberation," he writes.
Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2009/nov/09/berlin-wall-anniversary-celebrations Wow, and its 20 years already...... Would be nice for some german facepunchers to post some pictures
I'm glad all that's finally over.
Lovely!
And everyone remember, David Hasselhoff had nothing to do with the fall of the Berlin Wall.
I wish there was still a Cold War...

Yet nobody stops to consider the feelings of that woman who married the damn wall. :saddowns:
Thank god for the Hoff, if it wasn't for him it would still be there today.
How ironic would it be if one of those dominos was painted like a curtain and the domino effect stopped at it.
How ironic would it be if one of those dominos was painted like a curtain and the domino effect stopped at it.
That would be gloriously hilarious
I have a piece of the Berlin Wall. Came with the Collector's edition of World in Conflict. I'll post pics in a minute.
I wish there was still a Cold War...
So everyone in the West and East could live in fear? Yeah, that's great. My parents were terrified when they watched the Vietnam war and heard about the Korean War. Though the Cold War is interesting, you certianly wouldn't want another one.
I have a piece of the Berlin Wall. Came with the Collector's edition of World in Conflict. I'll post pics in a minute.
what the fuck seriously

But how do you know it's actually from that wall?
It have got a goddamn ZERTIFIKAT!
But how do you know it's actually from that wall?
The card's a certificate of authenticity. And it has the emblem of the GDR(East Germany, for those unacquainted with the Cold War).
Funny thing, the ad in the bottom of the site is from RussianEuro.com which is one of those "Find a russian wife" sites :v:
Happy Honnecker's fall from power day!
Yes, something did happen on 9/11 :smug:
Huh, the Sesame Street 40th anniversary is tomorrow.
