Jeff Sessions Doesn’t Commit To Not Jailing Journalists For Doing Their Jobs
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said Tuesday at a confirmation hearing to become the country’s next attorney general that he has not studied the current guidelines for investigations involving journalists and wouldn’t commit to not jailing them in the course of probing leaks.
In questioning Sessions, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) recalled how her father was a newspaper reporter and said she believed the press “is essential to our democracy.” She noted how former Attorney General Eric Holder revised the agency’s rules in 2015 for when federal prosecutors could subpoena journalists or their records and affirmed while in that position that he wouldn’t jail reporters for doing their jobs. Is there anything even remotely positive that has come out of this man's career so far? He's come off as being one of the most despicable figures in office I've read about.

You can look through his wikipedia, he's done some good like offer better assistance for child abuse victims but still, it pales in comparison to the horrible things he has sponsored and done.
And I bet those slimy Republican fucks'll still confirm him.
“If confirmed, will you commit to following the standards already in place at the Justice Department and will you make that commitment not to put reporters in jail for doing their jobs?” Klobuchar asked.
“I’m not sure,” Sessions responded. “I have not studied those regulations.”
...
“So I do believe the Department of Justice does have sensitivity to this issue,” he said. “There have been a few examples of where the press and the Department of Justice haven’t agreed on these issues. But for the most part, there is a broadly recognized and proper deference to the news media.”
However, Sessions suggested it’s possible that a media entity could serve as a “mechanism through which unlawful intelligence is obtained.”
Help me out here, I don't see the fault. Sessions is not sure on the regulations, so he's not going to commit to a certain action before he takes office. What happens when DoJ gets actionable intel that the press is about to leak extremely sensitive "people-could-die-level" government information?

This article ultimately amounts to "guy does not say he won't do a thing." We've had more than a few of those articles recently, and they never turn out to be of any importance.

Of course, he'll fit right in!
Maybe they should instead jail those who spread fake news.

Too late for that. This campaign, more than any other in recent memory, has so utterly destroyed the population's faith in any news at all that fake news now rules the day.
We lost that fight. The truth died. It will be up to our generation to revive it.
To be fair, its a broad question, not very specific at all. He answered it fine, in my opinion.
Why shouldn't they be jailed if they're using illegal or I guess more accurately, illegally obtained information? Information them or source broke laws to get? I don't think they should get a pass simply for being journalists.
A press pass is no excuse to break the law.

They can't go out an obtain information illegally, but if information is disseminated to them from some source, they should be free to report on it as they will. That is actually what the media is for...
