We are with Hastings Mongrel Mob president Rex Timu’s turf and his foot soldiers are here too - and they’re big guys, dressed head to toe in red and black. The headquarters is sparse but homely, and surprisingly well presented. "We keep our whare nice and tidy," says Mr Timu. The house is manned by alternating members using a roster - with what they’re telling us is a strict no drugs policy, and I’m surprised to find out we’re not the only ones Mr Timu is inviting in. "Anyone’s welcome," he tells us. "Our gates are always welcome to anyone who wants to come in here and feel safe. Where previously in the past it didn’t used to be like that but now anyone can come in here and relax and do whatever they want to do." "We don’t want to hide away behind big fences and gates and stuff, even though we’ve got one." This is a different era for the Mongrel Mob, and today history is being made - they’re welcoming their sworn enemy into their home. No patched Black Power member has ever set foot on this turf. So why now? "I think there’s an understanding amongst our two groups, we’re pretty much similar," says Mr Timu. "The only thing that breaks us apart from the Black Power is the colours that we wear - that’s the only difference. Anything else we’ve pretty much got similar ways of doing things and I know that none of us will back down so at the end of the day there can be no winners especially on the violence side of things. They want peace, we want peace, you know, there’s no winner in this. Wow, that's really cool of them. I wish other criminal groups would do the same.
Is the mob leader actually referred to as a president or is that fancy wording on the article's part?
Is the mob leader actually referred to as a president or is that fancy wording on the article's part?
It's what the head of a biker gang is usually called.
Never thought I'd see the day. Kinda hoping this rubs off on the smaller gangs, but I'm probably being too optimistic.
They were all "Yeah we're pretty nice guys 'n all, yakno'" and then BAM, nazi naval flag!
You know they already did this a couple of years ago and it didn't last.
I'll care when it's a chapter in a big city like Wellington or Auckland. Hastings is hardly an economic powerhouse.
Meanwhile in Los Angeles gangs have moved from things such as Blood on Crip violence into things like Blood on Blood violence. This would actually be kind of funny if so many random innocent weren't getting killed in droves. At least some of the worst neighborhoods are now being gentrified. I'd rather deal with hipsters than ghetto people. Anyways it's good to see people returning to normal society instead of wasting their time on nonsense.
