• After China's multibillion-dollar cleanup, water still unfit to drink
(Reuters) - China aims to spend $850 billion to improve filthy water supplies over the next decade, but even such huge outlays may do little to reverse damage caused by decades of pollution and overuse in Beijing's push for rapid economic growth. China is promising to invest 4 trillion yuan ($650 billion) - equal to its entire stimulus package during the global financial crisis - on rural water projects alone during the 2011-2020 period. What's more, at least $200 billion in additional funds has been earmarked for a variety of cleanup projects nationwide, Reuters has learned after scouring a range of central and local government documents.
Source
How the hell is it THAT bad even still. http://investorplace.com/2013/02/chinas-pollution-problem-about-to-become-everyones-problem/ + http://factsanddetails.com/china.php?itemid=392 scale of 0-500 china is 755, NY is like, 14 yeah we need to step in and do something about china, even if it's only a little push, this is fucking terrifyingly bad. When I say "We need" I mean literally everyone in the world needs to say "Step it up!". China needs serious assistance because we just can't allow the pollution issue to continue, no matter how difficult to stop it is.
Damn, so China, was it worth it?

We turned our entire civilization into a giant factory! We made TONS of money!
$850 billion is a lot of fucking money hope it gets put to actual use instead of lining the pockets of their wonderfully corrupt politicians.
China used to be a beautiful country, but not it has intoxicated itself with greed.
They tried
China used to be a beautiful country, but not it has intoxicated itself with greed.
And two-stroke smoke...can't forget coal smoke either. Plenty of that floating around.
China used to be a beautiful country until they mass industrialized and ruined their country. Now a good portion of it is a shithole with dirty water, polluted water sources and worse.

China's pollution will be it's downfall.
-what snip scared-

Because people usually only act when it effects them in some major way, and considering noone has acted in china/what they tries to do didn't work and it's this bad, I fear for the future.

There are loads of untouched and clean areas.

"Why should I care if china drowns in it's own pollution?" is exactly the short sightedness most people suffer from.
That's what happens when you have random industrial zones everywhere instead of placing them neatly
That's what happens when you have random industrial zones everywhere instead of placing them neatly
Industry is only part of the problem. The bigger problem is the almost non-existent government regulation concerning pollution. All they have is a pollution index and do little or nothing to attempt to control the horrible problem. I think the government is more concerned about economic growth than the environment. The biggest source of the grey smog are the 6 million tons of high-sulfur coal they burn each day for power for the cities. The second highest sources of pollution are the low quality gasoline used in vehicles and metal smelting.

They obviously spend a lot of cash, tying to do something. But as you saw in the article $110 billion just aimed to clean water didn't do much.
You guys realize China doesn't consist of one city right? There are loads of untouched and clean areas.
all big cities are shitty the countryside is ok. [editline]21st February 2013[/editline]
"Non-existant" is perhaps an exaggeration, I'd say the regulations are very unproportional to the amount of factories, cars and whatever that's causing the pollution.
Sounds like how Fox news circle-jerks an ideal America where corporations have no regulations.
That's what I was thinking. You wouldn't believe how many times "dismantle EPA" comes up every time they talk about reducing spending, or "deregulate corporations" every time economics is up. It's like they want to be the next China.

Everybody knows China's situation is terrible and they can reasonably put themselves in China's position, but this doesn't spur them on by itself.

What the fuck can I actually do to create difference in China? Donate money to an organization? Support a politician that will aggressively impose some sort of clean up act? Short of taking a plane to China and getting shit done myself, I guess the best thing is to raise awareness of the issue and hope that people/organizations who can actually do something act on it.
you people need to realise something.. i went to china, visited 7 cities. not one of them more polluted than London. all these news stories are poor misrepresentation. They use electric scooters, there's not a sound of 2-stroke when I went.

When I visited in Oct. 2012 pollution was pretty horrible. it's not car pollution that matters. Yes they use electric scooters, but it's industrial pollution that causes the majority of these problems. no worse than south london
no worse than south london
the particles are different.
actually better, less rate of yobs and there's a tranquility among people.
actually better, less rate of yobs and there's a tranquility among people.
I don't have much experience with london drivers but chinese drivers are fucking horrid (taxi I was in nearly ran someone over and I witnessed 3 car accidents in 2 weeks) as for tranquility, I'm guessing you haven't seen locals haggling? that shit is insane
locals haggling? that shit is insane
they're poor, what do you expect. That wasn't surprising, if people were that poor here they'd go insane too.
