Update: We now have £80 So me and my friends are hosting a large-ish LAN, we have about 25 - 30 people coming. So far, we have £80 to spend on stuff for the LAN. The main things i had in mind were: Ethernet Hub Surge Controls Very large cat5 cable, and Ethernet heads so i can cut it up and crimp it. Is there anything else i should buy? If not, then can you guys recommend some good wireless and Ethernet hubs to use. I think this is in the right section :shobon:
Do you need wireless? People would get better performance with wired
Do you need wireless? People would get better performance with wired
Yes, you shouldn't get wireless.
Do you need wireless? People would get better performance with wired
We just need wireless because last time we hosted the LAN, some peoples PC's were incapable of connecting through Ethernet. No matter what we did, we couldn't get it to work. So this year, we're going to bring a wireless hub, just in case.
£60 is not alot at all to work with.
You are not going to get wireless with a £60 budget, stick to good old ethernet
Do you have a router?
£60 is not alot at all to work with.
How about £80? And we don't need a wireless hub, i can borrow one.
How about £80?
Why not see if everyone coming can donate a few bucks each for it?
Why not see if everyone coming can donate a few bucks each for it?
That's what the £80 is.

Ask people to bring their own CAT5(e)/6 cables and surge protectors. Then just get a 50 port switch off ebay.... (seriously that is cheap as fuck... They usually retail at £250+)
Where are you going to be hosting this?
Food and drinks covered for?
Where are you going to be hosting this?
A medium sized hall, which supplies tables and chairs.
Food and drinks covered for?
People are supplying their own. Can we just plug that in with a kettle plug, and then link everyone to it, and we should all be able to connect to mshome?

Atleast I learned that during my practical training at a networking company.
Make sure that there is enough power
just get some cheap intel NIC's and a router
Make sure that there is enough power
Yes, they say to allow 3-4A per person (Assuming Europe / 230V, seems as you used GBP.), which for 30 players means that you need a power source capable of supplying 90-120A. This is assuming people are just bringing their computers and monitors and not stuff like phone chargers and mini fridges. Also remember that anything else in the building requires power, so lights and your oven for example will be added on to this supply requirement. (Though obviously you don't have an oven in a hall, it serves as an example as I couldn't think of anything better. :P) You would need to take power from different ring main circuits, each circuit tends to be limited to about 20A. (But check on your circuit breakers.) £80 from 30 players is about £2.67 each. If you get everyone to pay £5 you can have £150 to spend. Still not much, but it's a lot better than £80. You should also think about servers. Don't forget the cost of the hall.
