First time accepted submitter carlypage3 writes
"Benefits claimants in the UK are being forced to use Microsoft's now obsolete Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 software. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) states that its online forms are not compatible with Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9 and 10, Safari, Google Chrome or Firefox. As if that wasn't unnerving enough, the Gov.UK website says that users cannot submit claims using Mac OS X or Linux operating systems, either."
I apologize for Slashdot, but I thought this was interesting.

The gov.uk website looks pretty slick now, strange they haven't updated the most important bits.
I'm not sure how to respond to this.
The uk job website run by the government is a huge joke. Most people don't even have internet access or computers who go there to sign on. The website looks like a underconfigured-drupal setup and handles like it too. I get emails for jobs that are 100 miles away.
Is this a new thing?
If so, why develop a new system which only works with incredibly old and hated software?

DWP website looks old and shitty compared to the new Gov one, maybe it's genuinely old? Can't people who are unable to sign on online just go into the job centre like they did before..?
My school actually uninstalls Windows Seven off of the computers and installs Windows XP and IE7.

They are trying to force people to use it as the only way to show your applying for jobs too (Frowning on using anything else) - The government website was setup by the same people who did monster job search. They have a box when you signup that asks if you want the government to snoop your account and view what your applying for and when along with accessing all the personal details you have to supply.

People remember vista too much i guess. Windows 7 is the best operating system out there by far right now with the exception of Ubuntu as second choice of course.

No they just never updated their system.
My school actually uninstalls Windows Seven off of the computers and installs Windows XP and IE7.
Wow, I thought mine was the only school that did that. What's even more horrifying is that they set XP to the Win 98 theme :suicide:
I'd take xp over ubuntu.
Good. I'm sick of all them welfare queens, with their Windows Vista and their Google Chrome.
What? I filled in their online form claiming for job seekers using Windows 7 and Firefox...

I think if you decline they stop your benefit.

If I had to use XP and IE6 I'd be claiming benefits too.

The best part is the Windows 7 Professional product key sticker on the side.
Legit. Legal.

I won't mind."

Ubuntu without Unity is fine.

Here's my opinions, laid out in neat table form:

WindowsLinux

Best OSWin7 or Win8Gentoo

Worst OSME (Vista very close behind)Latest Ubuntu with Unity

Special NotesXP sucks due to ageUbuntu's just fine without Unity
To be honest the default themes in XP (except maybe Media Center Edition) looks like shit. I'd rather use Windows Classic Theme or download a completely custom theme.
i don't know shit about macs i just assume latest = best

aww, i wanted a merge

My school does this too and I don't understand why. Someone once gave me a reason that made sense, but I've long forgotten it. We have perfectly good Windows 7 computers and they force us to use the fucking ancient Windows themes. It's awful.

Vista actually isn't as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. It's the most stable OS I've used, actually; in my opinion, a lot of the backlash was incompatible drivers and crummy hardware. Windows ME, though, is a piece of shit.
Absurdly late compared to the register's article
For people wondering what the christ when it comes to the government / schools using XP, it basically comes down to RM Software (and similar companies) with their licensing agreements with these establishments hence why they remove 7 and install XP. If you've used Citrix in a workplace environment (not a recent ver which actually supports 7) then it's the same story really.
I was starting to think that Gov.UK was too good to be true, I just knew there had to be some sort of major flaw.
So, is this a case of the DWP site just being moved to Gov.UK and continuing as it was before or have they actually made this recently? If its new there really should be some sort of inquiry..
Well, they're not required to use XP and IE. They can also use Millenium and Netscape 7.2
