I've worked my way through the first 3 films, the first one I saw by chance at a friend's house, and it really grabbed me, so I had to see the others, anyways, I was left wondering after the 3rd film what other people might think, personally for me it's between the first two, the 3rd just didn't feel right, I wish it had been in a different setting honestly, it was more comedic than scary or thrilling, the ending though, that felt like a good way to leave it. I find it hard to pick between the first two for my favorite, the first is mysterious and you don't really see the alien too much, while the second has way more action and emotion. [sp]I really don't like how in the 3rd they just tossed out the less important characters, the second left it on a good note, everyone was alive after being against all odds, but it would be a challenge to get on, then they were just all "yeah they died, and heres another alien"[/sp] in summary; second was my favorite, Didn't like the 3rd.
Hate the third for what it did to the story. Still hoping Cameron comes along some day and says "you know what, fuck it, I'm making my own Alien 3" I love the first for it's incredible suspense, and the second for it's awesome action and characters, and how it expands the story neatly. I can't really decide between the two. Looking forward to the Blu-ray release of this later this year, and of course the prequel next year.
quad = 4 so wouldn't this be like, trilogy?
Alien is the best. James Cameron's version of the alien life cycle bites ass. Original Alien life cycle is best. And Aliens wasn't a horror movie. Second one is my favourite. Although in my opinion the first half of Resurrection was fucking amazing, they fucked up badly when they introduced the weird alien/human hybrid thing. If they hadn't done that then it probably would have been my favourite.

Be it Sigourney Weavers brick like performance, the paper thin characters, the retarded script, the hokey effects and the downright ridiculous plot. I mean Jesus. A fucking midget with a shotgun in an Alien movie. I have multiple reasons for disliking the second movie. Mainly that it completely misunderstands the role of the Alien. The Alien is almost like a monster from mythology, like a human, but different in subtle and arcane ways. It acts kind of like a predator sometimes, picking off wandering crewmen, but at other times it acts almost like a rapist. Crawling along the floor, groping at it's victims, almost savoring their fear before striking. It leaves them helpless and drained, pinned against the wall, fully conscious as they're slowly turned into eggs for the Alien. Which brings me to my second point, the queen. I have a personal gripe with the queen. I mean, I understand what James Cameron was going for with the whole "equate Ripley to the aliens" thing, but it really devalues the Aliens themselves. It turns an impenetrable mythic demon into a bunch of ants. It's part of a pattern with the whole third movie, trading in mind fucking for brainless run and gun action. Which is fine on it's own, but it bugs me because he did it to an already existing creature. And Cameron kicked Giger off the project. And speaking as an artist, that's probably the most douchiest of douchey things you can do. Though it is in keeping with James Cameron's trend of taking things other people come up with and sticking his dick in them. All in all, Aliens was probably one of the best action movies of all time. But Alien was a far better horror movie, devalued only because of the desensitization of modern audiences.
aliens > alien > alien 3 > alien shitsandwichrectum
All in all, Aliens was probably one of the best action movies of all time. Granted, Alien was a fucking amazing film and probably the best in the series, but as individual films I just prefer the second one.
quad = 4 so wouldn't this be like, trilogy?
We don't talk about the 4th Alien film. Anyway, my favourite is Aliens, but it can also be Alien. They're both different films, the first is a thriller/horror while the second is an Action film.
I liked all of them really. I just love the Alien, it's simply my favourtite fictional creature ever. I just love it, I loved Aliens and Alien. Alien 3 was okay granted, and I was just glad to sink my teeth into Alien 4, even though the cash cow had run dry. That's why I saw the AVPs, fuck Predator. That's why I rented the comic books with Alien from the library, I just love it. Oh and the games, :D [editline]07:44PM[/editline] I don't care what anyone says AVP3 the game was awesome, for me at least. I wish being an Alien was harder though, I looove stalking the marines and climbing around walls and shit
I try not to compare the first 2 (and only true Alien movies IMO). Ridley Scott's Alien is more of a surreal horror with hitchkockian and psychological elements. Aliens is a balls out action thriller with alot of style, subtext and substance - which in an action blockbuster, shows James Cameron's talent. Alien 3 was a clusterfuck by all standards. If you look at any version of the film, it hints at potential greatness, but fails at achieving any such level because of the huge clusterfuck the entire production was. The theatrical version was a butchered and hastily put together version of what was originally envisioned. The other cuts are somewhat better, but still very lacking. Alien: Resurrection also has moments of fleeting brilliance, but is pretty shit overall. I love the underwater scene however. I don't even consider the AVP films to be part of the "series". They are terribly shithouse, dumbed down mediocre popcorn films.
If you like Horror then Alien. If you like Action then Aliens. Personally I prefer Aliens just because of Bill Paxton.
Third and Fourth are fucking awful, you can't watch them more than once. The first and second are awesome, though both very different really. Alien is all about the suspense as has been said while Aliens is about the action. I've probably seen the second one more often though, I love it when the one marine who lost his cool at the start finally snaps and just goes full auto before he finally dies. The AvP movies really just poured salt into the wound though. Everyone was hoping for a resurrection I guess but the AvP games had wayy better storyline to go on, with is fucking tragic.
I bought the quadrilogy for like £50 years ago can't believe you can pick it up for £15 now :(

i'm waiting for the blu-ray which is supposed to come out around christmas this year but i already have it on dvd, of course.
I only saw the first two because I heard third was meh and fourth was an abomination but I liked second the best.
The quadrilogy is a waste of money. All you want are the first two movies and their bonus discs.
I only saw the first two because I heard third was meh and fourth was an abomination but I liked second the best.
Well, I still liked Alien 3.
Alien is the best. Never liked no. 3.
I find the problem with Alien is that it spends way too long setting the scene and then it is over with way too quickly. When people start to get killed off it happens too quickly and I find it devalues the character and destroys the suspense. With Aliens I have one problem, Newt... Most annoying character ever and ruins what should be a perfectly good action film. Like the whole 'they mostly come out at night, mostly' line annoys me. Also the whole story about Burke (if that is his name, been a while since I watched it) wanting to take an alien back home seems to be downplayed too much. Could of had a great bit of suspense where you know someone has different motives but not know who it is yet. Although they are both still fantastic films just a few things in them that annoy me.
3 and 4 are garbage. 4 especially. 1 and 2 are classics though.
2,1, big distance, 4, long distance, 3.
Alien 3 is the best - but unless you've seen the Director's Cut you can't really comment on it. The theatrical cut is garbage, and gives a lot of people the wrong impression. But the director's cut is breathtaking. It's about an hour longer, and has a very different story. In the theatrical version the alien comes [sp]from a dog[/sp] but in the movie it comes [sp]from an ox[/sp].
I liked all 3, the 3rd was of course my least favorite. My biggest problem with that one was that they killed everyone else off from Aliens. Hard to decide personally whether I like Alien or Aliens more, Aliens was made to be all about the action because they didn't want to make Alien in a new environment, the transition between the first one being about survival from the Alien to the second one where it was a (somewhat personal) war between Ripley and the Aliens felt like a good way to transit and I rarely see people break the flow like that in sequels and found it refreshing. However the 3rd movie went back to Alien in a new environment. I suppose the only thing I was glad about in Alien 3 was that they killed Ripley off, usually I don't like them killing main characters off after a long series of events (movies in this case) but this was one of the few times I was happy about it. Seemed like it couldn't of ended any other way anyways, by the end of the 3rd movie she had lost everything important to her, multiple times, I doubt she would of lived a happy life after all that.
Yeah as I said in the OP I really didn't like how after all the shit they went through in Aliens, they decided to just toss them out in the 3rd, "oh yeah, they died."
Why does everyone seem to think Aliens was an action film? I don't see the action. There's one scene where a bunch of marines are helplessly slaughtered and one scene where Ripley fights the queen. The rest was fairly slow and suspenseful. And as for James Cameron "destroying" the concept of the alien, I don't really get where you're coming from with that. The alien was always an infectious bug-like creature, the only reason I can think of in the first alien that it carefully picked off crewmember after crewmember was because it was the only one there, and the crew didn't have any weapons besides a flamethrower. And what else changed about the story?
First and second were definitely the superior ones.
