I installed Steam via wine etc... and it works great for the first couple min, but the moment the news pane shows on the screen, Steam closes/crashes...
I don't really know whats wrong and can't seem to find anything on the internet. My PC is an ASUS G73J Gaming laptop, so power is hardly and issue (6 gigs of RAM etc)...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You got the Software Centre version of wine, correct?
If so, try getting the one from the wine website, it's a LOT better

Wine 1.3.x has more features and is the latest, and I've had no stability issues.
Maybe it's because you're running the wrong OS for Steam.

Steam works well on Linux, for me at least
tl;dr version: Start steam with -silent as the steam web browser makes steam crash since it is broken with wine in the latest steam version.
You might be missing some fonts
Try running the command winetricks corefonts tahoma (assuming you have winetricks installed)
I don't remember specifically what fonts steam needs, but I had a similar issue with any portion of steam that uses its web browser until those fonts were installed.
One thing to remember when using winetricks though, is that it invalidates your options for bug reporting. At least, no bug reports is accepted to winehq when using winetricks.
Try PlayOnLinux. It works very well. Google it. It is a tool for managing seperate configurations and versions of Wine for different software, some preconfigured. Steam works wonderfully for me, and windows games work perfectly.
I guess I'm just retarded. I tried installing CS:S on here and it required I install via the Steam client, which crashes at ~10% so I can't finish up with PlayOnLinux. *shrugs*

PlayOnLinux has been buggy for a while. IMO just use Windows for gaming.

Usability > Bug Reporting when you aren't a dev
Any error messages? Bring up console, type wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/Steam.exe, see if the console give any output.
