• Russia reveals giant nuclear torpedo in state TV 'leak'
The Kremlin says secret plans for a Russian long-range nuclear torpedo - called "Status-6" - should not have appeared on Russian TV news. The leak happened during a report on state-run Channel One about President Vladimir Putin meeting military chiefs in the city of Sochi. One general was seen studying a diagram of the "devastating" torpedo system. Launched by a submarine, it would create "wide areas of radioactive contamination", the document says. The "oceanic multi-purpose Status-6 system" is designed to "destroy important economic installations of the enemy in coastal areas and cause guaranteed devastating damage to the country's territory by creating wide areas of radioactive contamination, rendering them unusable for military, economic or other activity for a long time", the document says. "It's true some secret data got into the shot, therefore it was subsequently deleted," said Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov. "In future we will undoubtedly take preventive measures so this does not happen again." However, the Russian government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta reported details of the weapon, without showing the diagram, and speculated about a super-radioactive cobalt device. So the leak may not have been accidental. According to state-run Rossiiskaya Gazeta, the destructive power attributed to the new torpedo's warhead would fit the description of a cobalt bomb. That would be a type of thermonuclear warhead with a layer of cobalt-59, which on detonation would be transmuted into highly radioactive cobalt-60 with a half-life longer than five years. Such a weapon would guarantee "that everything living will be killed", the paper said - there would not even be any survivors in bunkers.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-34797252
A nuclear torpedo? Thats a new one
A nuclear torpedo? Thats a new one
Not really, anything and everything has been made nuclear at some point during the cold war. Artillery, missiles, rockets, anti-aircraft missiles, recoilless rifles, landmines. If it goes boom, they stuck a nuke in it.
So, this is a threat then?
I think the fact that they're making a fucking cobalt bomb is more important That's Dr. Strangelove type shit
Dear World Superpowers. Please stop fucking with the future of humanity, your dick waving is not worth reversing the progress we have made as a species, and the poor animals that have to deal with our shit on a regular basis need a break from mass death and destruction. Please put your dicks back in your trousers, and make things better for all. Kind regards, Concerned Human
A nuclear torpedo? Thats a new one
They've had nuclear torpedoes at least since the Cuban Missile Crisis. One was almost used had it not been for one Soviet with a conscience.
And the cycle of building more nukes is most likely going to continue on.
And the cycle of building more nukes is most likely going to continue on.
Ever heard of the SALT and START treaties? Not really, unless the Russians purposefully decide to break it
Just make us look more and more like Tom Clancy villains, why won't you.
At one time, you were.
A nuclear torpedo? Thats a new one
Not even close to being anything new. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasili_Arkhipov
Arknipov, as flotilla commander and second-in-command of the nuclear-weaponized submarine B-59, was alone in refusing to authorize the captain's use of nuclear torpedos against the United States Navy, a decision which required the consent of all three senior officers aboard.
Thank you Arknipov for saving the fucking world
I highly, HIGHLY, doubt a communist country that controls everything everyone sees, fucked up bad enough so that top secret military documents were aired saying it was an "accident" and that "it wont happen again".
A nuclear torpedo? Thats a new one
If you are trapped before 1950 then yes it would be, As one was given to Russian submarine commander during a stand off with us forces about a certain island that had warheads on it.

A cobalt bomb has never been tested because of the devastating radiation it would unleash.
Whoa. I'm leaning towards the idea that this leak was intentional.
A nuclear torpedo? Thats a new one
You're joking right? They've had them since the cold war.
Funny how you're wrong but really you're right and you don't even know why you're actually right.
Wouldnt Russia as it is now be considered de facto facist? Serious question.
Just make us look more and more like Tom Clancy villains, why won't you.
Eh. Your government might suck, but most of you guys are alright. Hell, if you wanted to judge us by our government, you'd think we were all a bunch of foaming-at-the-mouth retards whose favorite solution to international problems involves jet fuel, high explosives, and lots of belligerent posturing.
Eh. Your government might suck, but most of you guys are alright.
Don't go to the Kremlin tommorow?
And the cycle of building more nukes is most likely going to continue on.
Nuclear stockpiles in Russia and the USA have been shrinking every year since the 1980s.
They are your representatives.
You'd think so based on the ideals of governance, but just observing how governments actually work, even in democracies and republics, you will see that they do not, in fact, represent the people. It's all idealist circlejerking and money that run politics. Not the people. Before I get too Chomsky up in here let me say that at least we get the opportunity to vote for which psycho (out of two) gets to make poor decisions for us [editline]12th November 2015[/editline] Actually I already went full Chomsky oops Pls forgive me for the inevitable derailment
Come on guys I know Fallout 4 was just released but I want to play it not live it.
Wouldnt Russia as it is now be considered de facto facist? Serious question.
We are not making ourselves better than other races, if you are talking about broad meaning of fascism. If you meant the original one, untainted by Hitler... We are still kinda far.
A nuclear torpedo? Thats a new one
Actually a Soviet Sub that got trapped by the US navy during the Cuban Missle Crisis was armed with nuclear torpedoes and nearly used them out of panic.
Nuclear torpedoes are old, however a nuclear armed submarine drone isn't as old and is interesting. What is even more interesting is the possibility of a salted bomb variant. Clearly this was purposely leaked, chance is the Russians are not actually working on this, but they put it out to dick wave. In the chance of an operational use of one of these things, if there is an accident, you got a huge problem. This isn't like the old Cold War era nuke torpedoes both sides had.
