First Hurricane for Florida for the season if Erika continues to strengthen on its path upwards.
If Tropical Storm Erika survives a pass near Puerto Rico and Hispaniola this week, Miami-Dade County emergency managers say they’re bracing for tropical storm force winds as early as Sunday.
Over the next two days, Erika is expected to sweep past the Leeward Islands and head toward Puerto Rico and Hispaniola, but what happens after that is less clear. On Wednesday evening, National Hurricane Center forecasters said the storm was “poorly organized” as it encountered the same dry air and high winds that helped weaken Danny. If Erika makes it past the eastern edge of the Greater Antilles, forecasters say the storm could reorganize in more hurricane-friendly territory near the Bahamas.

As an IT guy with 10 plus clients in floodzones right on the beach. I'm pissed.

poor you, losing IT clients while people lose entire homes and potentially lives
Erika? Like that one marching song?
Also, I'm not worried. Hurricanes seldom hit here. I doubt this one will be any different.
A category 1 should be manageable for Florida. No one needs to die if they properly prepare.

Surprisingly long time since an actual hurricane hit us. Cat1 can still damage stuff but we should be okay if it actually stays on that course

It's just a category one. It's not like we are New orleans. As long as the beach communities sandbag the coast and stay off any flooded roads. It's not like the clients will die I'm just saying that I will be super busy trying to make sure no equipment dies from lightning or floods. I'm not lessening the importance of people's lives but its a category one in florida. It's just an average summer.

What a stupid attitude. As if hurricanes can only be harmful to people if they totally destroy their homes.
it's going to hit us later in the day. but i'm sorta glad. we have been rationing water since june and if it doesn't rain we will only have water 2 times a week

Oh shit today
I havent even heard of this, thank god i bought a pack of water a couple days ago

I think he's just referring to having to fix their systems again.
Cat 1 and Cat 2 hurricanes are pretty much just a bad summer thunderstorm for a couple hours. Maybe a power outage here and there, but nothing devastating like people above are trying to make it sound like. I very much doubt that anyone will have significant property damage if this hits.
So far it is only projected to have 70mph winds by the time it hits FL. We have had much worse with pretty minimal damage. Not to mention, we literally have a building code specifically for this situation, but magnitudes worse.
Bring it (and the parties) on...

More business though?
Sell some lightning rods.

So, if he lost his job because of this, i.e. place is damaged to all hell and they cant afford to fix it, that means he could loose his home too, but nope, don't count that, since, it wasn't right away.
Finally we are getting gangbanged by hurricanes again
its been so long.

it's a fuckin cat 1 hurricane in florida
worst it's gonna do is topple a tree or two and potentially hit a powerline which will be fixed in a day. The best is no school and work because everyone is a bunch of panises.
get worried when it's cat 4.

Irene was a category 2 when it hit Florida, a category 1 when it hit Carolina, and a Tropical Storm when it hit New England. It still did a LOT of damage. Florida wasn't even directly hit, and it still killed ten people (morons who were trying to surf it, yes, but it was still a killer storm).
The hurricane force scale only measures wind speed. You can have "weak" storms that still do a lot of damage via rainfall or storm surge.

TS Fay arrived on a Monday in 2008 and just decided to park itself right on the coastline. School was cancelled from Tuesday to Friday due to the roadways flooding, and the entire county practically shut down in the meantime. Millions of dollars of property damage was dealt. Mother Nature is no joke.

Losing his home due to finances is harder than losing it all in an instant to a ravaging storm.
Not to mention, he can just A) Sell his house and downsize to meet his new financial situation and B) Find a new job, where as those losing their everything to a storm like a major hurricane can't so easily do that.
I live in Jacksonville, this kind of thing usually passes us by and at worst we get shit weather for 4-5 days. I remember about 4 or so years ago the beaches were getting ready to evacuate for a cat 3, but again it just grazed us. Flooding does suck ass though, but that's Florida. I still keep an emergency kit and some food and cash handy because you never know.
I feel bad for people in the Carolinas, they get fucked up hard routinely.
im on our hospitals Hurricane detail so this should be fun, last time we had a hurricane the ER flooded lol
Damn.. pretty shitty news
Tropical Storm Erika: At Least 25 Dead, Widespread Flooding Reported in Dominica; Florida Prepares For Possible Impacts
At least 25 people have been killed by Tropical Storm Erika on the small island of Dominica, officials told local media Friday morning.
The Ministry of Public Works told Trinidad and Tobago TV station CCN TV6 that the death toll has risen above two dozen after the storm left severe flooding and triggered mudslides on Thursday.
"Erika has really, really visited us with a vengeance," Claude Weeks, assistance police superintendent, told the Associated Press during a phone interview. Because many roads and bridges are impassable, crews are trying to reach isolated communities via the ocean, he added.
Among those confirmed dead were a blind elderly man and two children in southeastern Dominica, and another man was killed in the country's capital of Roseau, the report said.
Florida Prepares
The State of Florida Emergency Operations Center has activated to level two in preparation for possible impacts from Tropical Storm Erika.
"We are preparing the protective and responsive measures we will need if the storm continues to develop out of an abundance of caution," said FDEM Director Bryan W. Koon.
Boat owners and area marinas in South Florida have begun to make their own preparations. Sailfish Marina dock master Austin Peters told WPTV that a handful of captains have already moved their boats to safer areas. According to him, if there is a hurricane warning, all boats are required to leave the marina, which can be difficult because many of the boat owners live out of state.
"Usually some people will go south or north to avoid the storm, or they will go to a dry dock where they will be lifted out of the water," said Peters.
Damn, I just hope it's not bad enough to where flights may be cancelled next week..
I'm going to FL today and I hope I can get back home in time

Hurricanes are weird. Hurricane Ivan was a Cat 3 when it made landfall in the US. It hit Alabama and it still tore shit up even where I lived near Destin in Florida. I mean bridges looked like __-_----__-. Boats were on the north side of Highway 98. The road on the barrier island from here to Pensacola was gone, houses on said island were gone, houses on the bay side on the mainland were half gone... later I found an upside down boat by stubbing my toe on the bow while walking on the beach...No food or water, had to get MRE's from the National Guard, power was out in my area for a week and MUCH longer in other places... It just fucked it all up
Then here comes hurricane Dennis not long after. cat 3 when it made landfall. Eye of the storm was a mile or two to my west. Internet and Electricity stayed on throughout, didn't tear much of anything up. It was kind of fun, even
If it isn't a STRONG Cat 3, don't even worry about it

Yeah that's right, when 4 Megapixel was great
well the storm sorta blue balled us and didn't hit us like it was suppose to. didn't even see rain except for some light showers.
have fun with your turn guys.

I hear about Ivan all the time around here. Moved to Navarre around 2011 for Freshman year and places still haven't fully recovered. My girlfriend said she had to live in an RV in her front yard for weeks until her house was fully repaired and mold free.

Florida is much more prepared for hurricanes than Carolina and especially New England. Buildings here are required to be built with hurricane safety in mind. A category 1/2 is not a danger to Florida.
2008 was a clusterfuck I remember being in a bathroom with candles.
Well that's great. I'm literally going to be in Florida visiting relatives the day this hits, and I'm leaving a day or two after.
At least I'll be more inland. Tallahassee doesn't seem like it's going to be majorly effected.
2008 was a clusterfuck I remember being in a bathroom with candles.
Wilma was the worst hurricane I personally experienced. Power went out for two weeks.
2008 was a clusterfuck I remember being in a bathroom with candles.
Reminds me of 2004 when we got back-to-back hurricanes, no power for weeks, trees impaled through houses, overturned cars strewn about flooded/blocked roads and driveways.
This state wasn't meant to be colonized.
