• Graphics Card Fan Stopped Running (Geforce GTS 250)

Hey, so back in Janurary my computer started playing up, I was in the middle of a game of League of Legends and my screen suddenly turned off, I didn't think anything of it. I thought it was just having a random hiccup. So I booted it up again and checked out speccy just to be sure and it turns out that the fan had stopped running all together and the GPU was running at 100 degrees Celsius and the GPU was crashing or something. Didn't realize it was such a long time ago, but I've finally rebooted it in my living room and checked the temperature (I didn't have the money previously to get it checked out but I thought I'd ask here for some advice before taking it into the shop I bought the parts from just in case they try screwing me over.) Anyway, I've got a fan laying on it's side shooting directly into the case so the card doesn't overheat, but I can't do that forever. Just typing this from the desktop at the moment while I'm updating graphics drivers just in case in some wonderful parallel universe that that's the problem. The innards of the case are a bit dusty, but I don't see any dust on the blades, all the cables seem to look like they're plugged in. Here are my current specs;
I have the same GPU as you do and I had the same problem. I didn't knew why so I just used another way to fix it. I don't know if you can do it or not but whatever, here's how I fixed it. I cut the wire from the board so I could solder it onto the 12V contacts that are at the side from the GPU. I don't know what model you have so I don't know how easy it is to reach those pins for you.
I'm sort've having trouble comprehending where that cord is going lol, I'm overly too sure which cable controls the fan as well
There's no cable that controls the fan, it's the GPU itself. The yellow wire that goes to the fan reads (as far as I know) only the RPM. I really don't know how that controlling stuff works. [editline]14th August 2013[/editline] I assume this is the one you have.
You can get replacement blowers on Ebay for cheap. I had to get one for my HD5870 awhile back. You'll have to disassemble the card to get the blower off though. This requires that you unbolt the heatsink from the card and then unscrew the blower from the heatsink. All you have to do then is to get the part number off the back of the blower and type it in Ebay. The other option is to either get an aftermarket cooling solution or buy a used GTS250. I saw a used GTS250 512M for $30 on Ebay.
There's no cable that controls the fan, it's the GPU itself. If it's a 3 wire fan, the 3rd wire is for sensing the RPM. If it's a 4 wire fan, the 3rd wire is the same and the 4th wire is PWM.
Thanks for the help guys, think it's time to just suck it up and buy a new card, I'm not good at soldering stuff so I'll probably see what the guys at the parts shop have to say and check out what's good and compatible. It's a pretty old card too so it will be nicer to play games on high for a change instead of medium :v: Thanks again guys! I'd repair the blower just so you have a spare card, they're really cheap.
