• My laptop won't read CD-roms

Hi everyone I have a problem. My laptop can burn CD-r's and read dvd's and write them too, but some (or all of them I think) cd-roms like the WoW install discs or Worms 2 (Sold-out Games edition) it won't recognize. I insert the cd's, they spin for a few second and then it stops (nothing that sounds weird or unhealthy, just as if it 'forgets' I've inserted a CD) and asks to insert a disc. I can't read audio Cd's either. All the rest goes well. I'm on an Acer Aspire 5520G I just bought 6 months ago and I'm running Vista Home. [editline]06:53PM[/editline] Okay guys nevermind I fixed it by reinstalling the drivers. Goddamn I feel stupid for making this useless thread
Okay the problem recurred. I just burned a DVD and it won't recognize it either. What the hell's going on?? I don't feel like reinstalling my drivers and rebooting each time I want to use a cd/dvd. Movie DVD's go fine though (didn't test that extensively)
Update the firmware.
Get it fixed under warranty
Could be on the verge of failure, or a cables loose inside. I assume you tried cleaning the optical lense, right? If its obstructed, like a thick layer of dust or other matterial, it could create write errors and have trouble reading disks.
Are you attempting to read/write wrong-region DVDs?
[QUOTE=Kialtia;19482304]Update the firmware.[/QUOTE] What firmware? How do I do that? Do you mean the drivers? THe drivers are Windows's... Looked on google, can't find anything. Goddamn I'm never buying a cheap Acer laptop ever again, their customer support just goes like "Oh you have a problem, okay we'll take note we'll call you. FUCK YOU ASSHOLE YOU'LL NEVER HEAR FROM US AGAIN" [editline]03:04PM[/editline] [QUOTE=Juggernog;19483005]Are you attempting to read/write wrong-region DVDs?[/QUOTE] It's set to Europe and I bought my DVD's here so I think that's ok. And how can it be failing I just bought it 6 months ago and the only thing it doesn't do is recognizing cd's/dvd's (I installed NWN2 succesfully), and everything worked perfect for one day after I reset the drivers... So it can't really be a hardware problem, if it succesfully BURNS everything but it just doesn't recognize anything. Like I said before it even worked perfectly a few days ago after resetting the drivers so it's purely a software problem IMO. I turned off MagicDisc and I have no virtual drives active. Device manager says it works fine. Could it be because I changed the boot order in the BIOS? [editline]03:09PM[/editline] Oh and it's an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530B ATA device
If it's 6 months old it's under warranty. Make them fix it.
But they don't want to :( I'll guess I'll call customer support from hell again and fight my way to it. Maybe they can also fix my cooling, although I hope they don't take too long...
I tend to find that disc drives fail a lot more often and without much use either, try it using another drive if you have one lying around. Also I seem to recall you do not really need to install drivers for disc readers...?

Yeah but they do try to make my life a living hell though...
