Eon 8 Eon 8 was a mysterious site established in 2006. On the main page of the website was a countdown to midnight of July 1st. It also had the project status of something called 'X13600' listed There was also another section of the site that displayed a map of the world with various spots pinpointed. The website was overflowed with traffic as many people watched the minutes tick away. It caused an outburst of speculation of what would happen when the timer runs out and what the website's purpose was. Even here on Facepunch people were concerned with it. Some people went as far as to try and hack the site, ultimately turning up nothing in the process. Some people speculated that it was a cryptic trailer for a movie or game that was coming out. Some thought it was going to be a mass screamer. Some thought there was something more sinister happening. Whatever the case, people sat at their computers and watched as the timer slowly but surely reached it's final and sickeningly suspenseful minutes. People told their families that they loved them, locked their doors, or sat in their bedroom with a weapon ready for what might be the last moments of their lives as this 6 month long mystery would finally reach it's climax. The timer reached zero. Nothing. It turns out that the whole thing was not a hoax, but just a simple test.
RESULTS We were amazed to discover that the site was instantly linked with terrorism, simply for the fact that it seems mysterious. Evil was the number one first impression people had of the site, in spite of the fact that there are no threats on the site. The only thing Eon 8 says is "We don't want you here". Nothing else. Other less disappointing opinions were social experimentation (which was correct), James Bond movie viral marketing, and promotions for video games. For many people, being faced with a countdown timer was an instant reason to try to shut down or hack the site. This is a worrying reaction, that if someone doesn't understand something they must destroy it. As a result, the servers have been hit quite hard these last few days, but luckily 99% of the 'hackers' could easily be described as 'l4me n00bs'. Another worrying example of paranoia was how quickly people would jump to conclusions, such as telephoning the registered owner of a dog seen in a photograph on a server that hosts a page that links to eon8.
Even though the 4 year anniversary of the timer reaching zero has passed, I just thought I'd share a bit of internet history, seeing as how a lot of people here got worked up about it.
Classic
I remember when people used to get banned for linking it because it was the main discussion of all of FP until the timer reached zero. Really interesting to see how insane people go over a timer and a few words every couple of days to the extent of hacking it and trying to bring it down.
Eon 8 didn't even feel that long ago.
I really wish I could find the original thread to it.
Holy shit, I remember this.
Holy shit, I remember this.
I also have a really faint memory of it. It's a long time ago now.
one of my personal favorite social experiments, it was so much fun seeing people flip out all over the internet
I remember the bans for it, eon8 became a ban word and like 100 people got banned. it was great. "EON8 BANNED - You can come back tomorrow when we all find out it's a viral advertisement for Spyro the Dragon 8 or whatever"
it's like everyone was united under one really fucking stupid cause
I got banned like 6 times because of this shit.
Oh man I remember this. Everyone was freaking out about it.
Totally forgot about this. It was kind of interesting but I will admit, I was pretty sceptical that anything particularly life changing would happen so I'm glad I didn't get my hopes up for anything amazing. Also, I bet pretty much everyone who enters this thread is going to do so on the off chance you only just discovered this so they could make a 'more like Eon late' pun.
Ha, I remember this. I was actually a teensy bit worried about it. [editline]01:25AM[/editline] Holy shit? 2006? Seriously? Goddamn
I remember this :ninja:
I kept hoping it was the countdown for the release of some really sweet, revolutionary game.
I wish I was there.
4 years? Seriously? Great, now I feel old
I remember this, too bad nobody I talked to about this remembered it.
Holy shit i remember this.
Never heard of it, but what an interesting experimentation.
I remember this, I knew people IRL who were boarding up their homes LITERALLY and hiding in their house as it reached 0.
Never heard of it, people are sad.
I hadn't even heard of this. I can't believe I just went on with my life. DRAMA!
Never even heard of this site or its intentions. Seems like it was pretty cool.
Has it really been so long? Geez, time flies.
4 years ago.. Time flies too fast, it scares me..
I've never seen this before.
I remember this quite well, but I don't remember it being four whole years ago now, wow...
they should do something like that again but make it a mass screamer.
