John Kerry plays with semantics: US isn't at war with ISIS, it's a "major counterterrorism operation
(CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday would not say the United States is at war with ISIS, telling CNN in an interview that the administration's strategy includes "many different things that one doesn't think of normally in context of war."
"What we are doing is engaging in a very significant counterterrorism operation," Kerry told CNN's Elise Labott in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. "It's going to go on for some period of time. If somebody wants to think about it as being a war with ISIL, they can do so, but the fact is it's a major counterterrorism operation that will have many different moving parts."
Kerry made a distinction between ISIS and terror groups operating in Somalia and Yemen.
"ISIL is an animal unto itself," he said. "And it is significantly such a threat because of the foreign fighters that are attracted to it -- which you don't see in Somalia or ... Yemen." Most importantly, Kerry said, ISIL has attracted a "significant coalition" that is determined to go and destroy it.
Oh, it's not a war.
That's a relief.
I thought there was going to be shooting, death, planned operations involving our military, and stuff involving all of that on foreign soil.
Good to know none of that will be going on.
(not against it.. but fucks sake, call it what it is.)
Oh for fucks sake, stop trying to sugar coat it.
The only way this could be even more war-ish is if we actually had boots on the ground.

Does anyone else find it funny that the Obama administration is the only group that calls ISIS "ISIL"?

I called them ISIL, up until the went to just IS. Many people recognize them as ISIL, just because the media popularized the just as incorrect ISIS monkier doesn't mean they're trying to cover up their shortcomings in the oval office
I spell it ISIS because it's easy to type :v:
They don't want to call it a war because conventional wisdom on the hill is that using the word "war" means you are instantly impeached in whatever position you are in even if you can't actually be impeached from that position.

They don't want to call it a war because that would mean Congress has to approve it first, which odds are they wouldn't.
