I've got an old tower I never use and a laptop which I do.
Any way to share resources like GPU or CPU between them? Maybe a newb question but i dunn caaareee.
cluster, but not going to happen without the right shit.
Clustering doesn't work well between laptops and desktops
I can imagine this is something that'd require specialist software or hardware and would be fairly complex to actually get working for anything you'd want it for. Clustering can be used for protein folding and shit but not gaming or anything normal like that.
lol protein folding

Cluster
Only thing you could actually use it for are highly parrellizable batch/offline tasks, such as rendering or encoding.
Say I made a cluser computer, would linux be a good operating system? and are there specific programs that will take advantage of all of the pc's while encoding dvd files etc?

There is something like this - http://sourceforge.net/projects/bripper/ that apparently does cluster media encoding. I really have no idea about how it works or what its capabilities are though.
