If you’re an old-school gamer or someone who only knows Samus from Super Smash Bros., you recognize her as a badass broad who can easily arm cannon you in the face—she’ll do it. Later on in her career, we got to see another side to Samus via her zero suit. A form that was more feminine and less clunky metal that Samus was famous for. Gender identity fodder? Wait a minute, not so fast.

So, what is prompting the discussion of Samus being transgendered all of a sudden? An article on The Mary Sue that misinterprets a statement made back in 1994 from an interview featuring Hirofumi Matsuoka, one of the creative forces behind Samus Aran. To further compound this, the statement that confirms Samus as trans—shemale actually—didn’t come from an official source, but a Metroid fan site. Old scans of the interview in question were written in Japanese and translated by site admin Devin Monnes who goes by “CapCom” on the site Metroid-Database. Japanese to English translations aren’t always a 1/1 translation and is subject to being mistranslated or having the translation meaning misinterpreted.

Even within context, the term used to describe Samus was “newhalf,” a Japanese term “ニューハーフ” ‎(nyūhāfu, “new half”), from “ハーフ” ‎(hāfu, “half; person of mixed Japanese and other ancestry”). Modern usage is slang for trans people, which is what caused confusion. In this particular instance, it is believed to be used jokingly to describe Samus as she was originally meant to be male, but had her character change mid development. Instead of being the usual hero, players were in for a surprise twist; “Wow! Samus is a girl?!” was spoken by gamers the world over.
Did this really require another thread? Everyone already agrees with it.
Brianna Wu is just an attention whore, not sure why the other thread was even posted.
all this from a few tweets from two or something mentally deranged people
i love twitter
why can't these be posted in the identity politics thread or something so no one has to read it
Brianna Wu is just an attention whore, not sure why the other thread was even posted.
Gotta love how she can say that everybody who disagrees with her is a transphobe without generating any outrage.
What's this, the third thread now?
video game character is video game character. In other news.
What's this, the third thread now?
Pretty sure there was another one or two from last week.
how about instead of forcing transgenderism onto already established cis characters we encourage creators to write actual well-written and thought out transgender characters
how about instead of forcing transgenderism onto already established cis characters we encourage creators to write actual well-written and thought out transgender characters
People like Brianna Wu pretend there is a general hatred for transgender characters, but in reality the backlash stems from them trying to hijack and re-purpose already existing, popular characters.
I see it happen a lot on tumblr. Some people really enjoy taking popular characters to turn them into minorities. They have a real obsession with it. I don't think anyone minds fanon like that, but when someone with a big audience starts claiming it's canon in public, that's when the shit hits the fan.

Unfortunately to a lot a creators that translates to "write a trans character AND MAKE SURE EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT"
Brianna Wu is just an attention whore, not sure why the other thread was even posted.
She literally kicked up all of this stink so she could bitch about how she was being harassed and oppressed, just like usual.
People like Brianna Wu pretend there is a general hatred for transgender characters
The "bullies" that harass her play alot of Japanese games. They probably love trans/trap characters.

Just another attention wanting wannabe gamedev.

That's what I was thinking.

But making original well thought out characters is haaaaard...
Oh boy, can't wait for Wu to have a 'muh transphobia' shitfit over this.
She already has. You just have to look at the talk page for Samus to see her claims of transmisogyny.
But making original well thought out characters is haaaaard...
Probably scary for writers and the buisness men in gaming, one slip and the trans community would tear the game and the company apart.
Either you gamble and risk having that happen, or just have a typical male/female main character to play it safe.
No matter how well a character is written, someone is going to complain. Some times they got genuine arguments and good points, other times it's just attention horsing and downright trolling.
This is a case of the latter, where a label-sensitive person intentionally mislabels a character.
You can't really prevent something like this or the car crash-like effect it causes.
The other sister thread was literally just posted and locked likely for being non-news and absolute nonsense. Good lord, enough is enough
Wu is an extremely unstable person. If his/her history is anything to go by, then nothing said by Wu/John Flynt should be taken serious.
I am surprised people care about this crap
