• July will be crunch time for R18+ classification on computer games (Australia)
Minister for Justice Brendan O’Connor says July will be the time for Classification Ministers to decide on introducing an R 18+ classification for computer games. “Australians who’ve been following this debate will know that this issue has been on the table for many years, without the necessary progress to make a change,” Mr O’Connor said. “Last year the Gillard Government declared its position and it’s time for all States and Territories to declare their hand on this issue. “The introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games will provide better advice to parents and help prevent children and teenagers from accessing unsuitable material,” he said. At today’s Standing Committee of Attorneys-General in Wellington, draft guidelines for the classification of computer games were tabled. The guidelines were requested at the last SCAG meeting in December. The draft guidelines: * provide appropriate safeguards to restrict the availability of material that’s unsuitable for children * address the difference in nature between films and computer games, especially in terms of interactivity * ensure that the Refused Classification category is retained. The introduction of an R 18+ classification must be agreed by all State and Territory Classification Ministers. No final decision could be made at today’s meeting as the New South Wales government is in pre-election caretaker mode. “I anticipate that my State and Territory counterparts will further consider the draft guidelines and seek their Governments’ position on an R 18+ classification before the next meeting in July,” Mr O’Connor said. “When making their decision, I urge State and Territory Governments to consider the value of an adults only rating in helping to protect children from unsuitable content as well as the strong public support for this move,” Mr O’Connor said.
Source
tbh all I saw was crunch time and thought this thread was about captain crunch. too bad. the world would be in turmoil if he were to be banned anyway that's too bad, especially since EVERYTHING is 18+ rated.
Does this mean aussies will be able to play more violent vidya gayms? or did they just introduce a new rating system?

And just like every other time there will always be a single reason why this wont pass. Well here's me hoping at least it gets through this time.
Why can't we just pass aditional legislation overriding the power that the state and territory AG's have. It's clear it's there is / was a stalemate that stopped progression, and it's known that an R18+ rating is needed for families and the consumer in general.
I like the part where this was suppose to happen over a year ago, but it kept getting delayed
I like the part where this was suppose to happen over a year ago, but it kept getting delayed
It should of happened longer than a year ago. We should never had to have fought for such a simple and understanding thing.
Don't get it, why can't the Australian government let adults have their piece of electric entertainment if that is what they want to do? No harm in it, unless some psycho kid takes the game too seriously. But even so, hate the player not the game.

But honestly I'm going to bet this meeting is going to be delayed for another year, not sure why it's so damn hard to agree that people are idiots and the rating is needed. Just the other day I saw some fat kid asking his mum for halo reach and she bought it for him as long as he plays it with his younger brother.
Good thing is both Gilard and Tony both want a R18+ for games and want it now.
Good thing is both Gilard and Tony both want a R18+ for games and want it now.
Good thing
About fucking time.
Can't wait to see all the games getting Re-Released when we get an R18+ rating With an even further marked up "Australia Edition" pricetag

If the majority of AG's don't like it, then fine. But if only a single guy doesn't want it then he should be overruled. And even then, why are the AG's deciding the rating system, what do they have to do with it?

[editline]9th March 2011[/editline] Oh, damn, the OFLC doesn't exist anymore. I old. The one that replaced it.
Fuck you mature age gamers, You're all murderers and don't deserve 'freedom of choice'
??? [editline]10th March 2011[/editline] Are you the former AG of SA?
The previous Attorney General kept denying that there are gamers over the age of 18.
Umm.. how easy would it to prove him otherwise? Very easy. Attorney General seems thick skulled
I don't understand this at all, if there isn't an 18+ rating does that mean that incredibly violent games are rated 15+ instead?
I don't understand this at all, if there isn't an 18+ rating does that mean that incredibly violent games are rated 15+ instead?
We just don't get to play them. (I live in australia.) Manhunt is a game that was banned in Australia and there have been many since. Left 4 dead 2 has no gore in the Australian version.. Thats all i can remember atm as i just woke up lol. Pretty much we either can't play it or they have to tone it down for us to play it.

I live in Australia, and if the R18 rating comes out, will L4D2 get uncensored?
Good thing is both Gilard and Tony both want a R18+ for games and want it now.
Too bad they head the federal Labor and Liberal Party, and not the state Labor and Liberal parties :( It's not up to them really, unless they want to change the legislation. [editline]10th March 2011[/editline]
I live in Australia, and if the R18 rating comes out, will L4D2 get uncensored?
Probably.
the federal government can override the state's legislation and rules on video game ratings with its own legislation, and if both labor and liberal are in favour of it, i can't help but assume that if the A-G's don't allow this, it'll just get passed in federal parliament; and quite easily, at that.
I don't understand this at all, if there isn't an 18+ rating does that mean that incredibly violent games are rated 15+ instead?
in some cases yes. L4D1 is 15+ GTAIV is 15+ etc etc some get banned (manhunt, l4d2)
I don't understand this at all, if there isn't an 18+ rating does that mean that incredibly violent games are rated 15+ instead?
Yes, many games that should receive an R18+ rating are sneaking in as MA15+, while other games that should have an R18+ rating are simply banned outright from sale.
The states retain the power to prohibit material the fed. has given the green light.
False. In the case that State and Federal legislation are conflicting, the Federal legislation will always be the correct one and override the State legislation. EDIT: Section 109 of the constitution. Check it.

There's no state legislation in the area afaik. EDIT: Looks like I'm wrong. I was under the impression that the area had been fully delegated to the Commonwealth, which isn't the case.
