Several arrests have been made in the secret pre-dawn raid, which is still in progress and one suspect has been taken into Australian Federal Police custody. The AFP says a suspected terrorist cell was “close to an attack.” The arrests follow the execution of a number of search warrants in Beecroft, Bellavista, Guildford, Merrylands, Northmead, Wentworthville, Marsfield, Westmead, Castle Hill, Revesby, Bass Hill and Regents Park. The Australian Federal Police can also confirm it is conducting search warrants in Brisbane. Warrants are being executed in the suburbs of Mount Gravatt East, Logan and Underwood. The raids come the day after a Sydney-based money transfer business was suspended from trading over possible links to terrorism. Federal agency Austrac discovered a $9 million discrepancy between what Bisotel Rieh Pty Ltd reported had been sent overseas over the past nine months and what the agency understood from its own checks had actually been sent. Last week the brother of a suspected Australian suicide bomber was arrested in Logan, south of Brisbane, for recruiting foot soldiers in the battle to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Omar Succarieh is one of two men who’ll be charged with organising incursions into Syria after a series of raids in Brisbane and Logan on Wednesday last week, following a year-long counter-terrorism investigation. This morning’s raids is believed to have been mounted following months of surveillance of people linked to the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The Daily Telegraph has learned that an estimated 600 officers from the Australian Federal Police, NSW counter terrorism unit and ASIO launched the pre-emptive strike in the early hours of this morning. The raids and arrests are believed to have been based on the execution of multiple ASIO and AFP warrants. It is believed that dozens of suspects have been netted, with links to a Brisbane man who was recently arrested on suspected terrorism related charges. It is believed that a terrorist network had been planning to carry out a series of attacks in Australia. The raid follows the lifting of the national security alert level from medium to high last Friday by the outgoing director general of ASIO David Irvine. It is believed the size of the raid eclipsed that of Operation Pendennis in 2005 when several hundred ASIO, AFP and NSW police arrested 13 men across Melbourne and the Sydney suburb of Bankstown, who had been planning bomb attacks in both capitals.
SOURCE: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/asio-and-hundreds-of-police-raid-sydney-and-brisbane-homes-in-biggest-counterterrorism-raid-in-australias-history/story-fni0cx12-1227062152150?nk=34da7797673e1e9651049ae74e23b20f Second source: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/police-swoop-on-sydney-brisbane-homes-in-terror-raids/story-e6frg6nf-1227062160671?nk=34da7797673e1e9651049ae74e23b20f
I'm surprised there have not been many more lonewolf attacks such as the Boston Bombing lately, given how easily information travels now days. Hell, AQ even has instructions on how to make replica pressure cooker bombs.
I'm just surprised we've gone on for so long without a terrorist attack. Makes us the odd one out in the western world

Very scary to think about.
On Triple J they were saying the suspects had planned to kidnap people and behead them on camera before sending the footage to ISIS for distribution.
