This isn't very surprising, first thing I thought of when they made their new official Bioshock twitter. Either that or there was a new game in the making. But seeing as the industry loves to cashgrab from their old titles lately. Yeah, it wasn't that farfetched at all.
Now we just need to know was it a visual upgrade or downgrade like Arkham Asylum and... I forgot what was the other bad remaster from few weeks ago ? Oh yeah, Hard Reset was either buggy or a bad remaster, not sure anymore.
Great....another remaster.

With the uprising of actually-good remasters, like Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War 1, I am not beyond Bioshock 1 & 2 remasters if they are actually proper.

Gears of War 1 was a good remaster. Call of Duty 4 seems to be done by a different studio under supervision of Infinity Ward. Some of the screenshots looked really bad.

All of the videos they've shown off for it have looked pretty good from what I can recall. I distinctively remember being impressed.

The trailer looked beautiful, but then again all trailers look beautiful.
The screenshots of it however, were questionable.
Specifically this one, the other two were nitpicking the way the soldier holds the gun with a grenade launcher..

Have you revisited Bioshock 1 lately?

A great re-master with the same art design of Bioshock 2 or Bioshock Infinite with cleaned up everything would be wonderful.

It's not the greatest comparison, but it's so iconic that it might as well be one.

Honestly, while they were more exaggerated and didn't make much sense sometimes, the lighting looks a little better in the original to me.

They got rid of Ryans moustache. Its trash
as weird as it is to mention, BS2's water effects really stand out to me still
especially if you play with the visor on it looks REALLY done

Oh boy, not again ! The original looks much better IMO. The new statue looks like it was just polished and not like it is made of bronze and aged a bit. The badly lit wall behind looks like it's from an old stone castle and not in a fancy building. The textures of stone pillars behind the lamps look like they lack detail, the stains. The whole scene also lacks contrast.
After almost 10 years why do they even bother making these little changes that add nothing, and can even make it worse ? Look at Serious Sam Classic and the HD releases, 8 years should make a huge difference, if your goal is improved graphics.
I reckon it's likely they made some overall engine changes/updates, and didn't bother/notice to go back and fix little details.
[editline]30th June 2016[/editline]
Either way though, they fucked up that andrew ryan statue. his expression is indecipherable in the new one, but you can clearly see his look of contempt in the original.
Maybe this will give me an excuse to actually finish Bioshock one

Are you not seeing the flag is literally casting shadows on itself? Plus transparency on it too.
And why should walls be that shiny anyway? and it has proper depth maps in the brick.
People get very cynical about HD Remakes. I'm sure you've been burned by remakes before, but there's no way you can say the classic is better, especially based on a single screenshot.

Arkham remasters were delayed for quality improvements. So yeah. Not a good time to remastered games.
Snip

bioshock is a heavily stylized game and this kind of thing is what adds to its style - plus, its a lighthouse. i'd imagine it'd be a little bit wet, all of the time, at least near the entrance.
I'll I've ever wanted was a remaster for bio 1
I'd like for them have change the animations to run at 60FPS
I'd like for them have change the animations to run at 60FPS
Consoles don't work that way, if you want 60 FPS animation you kind of have to sacrifice graphics and that's pretty bad.

Can already be done, no need to rebuy the game in this case.
I just want them to update the models and textures to not look muddy.
And if you already own BioShock, BioShock 2, and/or Minerva’s Den on Steam, you will be able to upgrade to the remastered version of the respective title(s) for free after release.
Wait, so I have BioShock 1 and 2, but no Minerva's Den. What happens in this case?

Well Minerva's Den is on sale, so I just decided to pick it up.
On the safe side.

Well, for me the original looks better compared to that single screenshot we got and has better atmosphere. That may be just a personal preference in this case, but at the end you can't tell me there is a noticeable 8 year difference in that picture, you really need to point your finger at it, and it is still questionable if it actually looks better. It's more just a straight re-release than a remaster. I mentioned Serious Sam and here look what 8 year difference looked like there. I'm sure I don't need to point out what is the new version:

They're re-releasing the games with a bit of polish, not adding a lot of graphical features. 60FPS animation would be possible and easy.

Especially when a mod like this exists.

The shiny walls are, as I said, exaggerated, yet they make sense. If a light is next to a wall, the wall should be lit up properly by the source. By taking away the shine, the walls just seem disconnected from the lights next to them. The two fixtures hanging from the walls shouldn't be treated as glowy things that only vaguely influence the lighting of the surfaces they're right next to, they should be brightening it up in proximity. The lighting as a whole in the collection actually seems to be subtly dulled down, which could potentially be a slight problem later in actual gameplay since Bioshock loved its expressive lighting.
the article doesnt mention it but if you already own bioshock 1 and 2 on steam you upgrade to remastered for free

Working with Blind Squirrel Games, we’ve remastered BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite making them look better than ever*. BioShock: The Collection brings the three titles together for the first time, complete with all single-player DLC** and a never-before-seen video series, “Director’s Commentary: Imagining BioShock,” which includes insights from Ken Levine – over $100 of content – for only $59.99. It’s a circus of values! And if you already own BioShock, BioShock 2, and/or Minerva’s Den on Steam, you will be able to upgrade to the remastered version of the respective title(s) for free after release.
