So basically, I need a laptop because my school has very little computers to spare for people to use outside of classes and I often need to code due to projects Though, since I have a lot of spare time too I want it to be able to do gaming on it

Don't expect good battery life for high-end laptops. You will basically treat it as a desktop, mainly keeping it in your dorm while only unplugging in occasionally.
I don't need a long battery life though, the places I hang out always have plugs
$800 CAD? Isn't that the equivalent of roughly 3 pine cones and a chicken egg? Just kidding :D I've seen that laptop before, and it's nice. The battery life is utter crap, but if you're near outlets you should be fine. It does tend to get quite warm on the bottom though.

yes
LAPTOP! With that budget you could get a netbook and a fairly good AMD computer that could probably handle Crysis well on high.
alienware m11x ;D
