I believe that when websites like CSGORoute and similar become legally approved, people who like to bet will continue betting, and those who bet only for the sake of danger and feeling the rush of adrenaline for doing something illegal will drive away.
No, I would be willing to bet the vast majority of people who bet on skins don't do it because it's illegal or gives them a rush, they do it because they see an opportunity to make money with little effort in a field they enjoy (video games) and they don't weigh the consequences. Then they lose and they feel motivated to get their money back. And the cycle continues.
This is particularly bad for people who can't stand to lose and feel they need to prove something... which is 99% of the CS:GO userbase.

I would agree, because this is standard practice for other types of gambling, but it shouldn't be made legal in the first place. As pointed out in the article very clearly, a great deal of people in this system are underage. They won't go away if an age barrier is put in place, they're going to find ways around it, which brings us back to the illegal/underground/black market situation.
People gambling over virtual items which in essence are worth $0 in the real world. I don't get this mentality of obsession over virtual items where people will pay hundreds for them. I used to be addicted to this shit in TF2 as well but I never got to the point where I was spending my hard earned cash on unusual hats and shit like that.
Yeah it's a collection of sorts but there's a huge difference to collecting valuable items in the real world and items in a virtual game.

People play game which has items, people like items, items gain value. As items gain value, other people start using them for gambling.
Not really hard to understand so just because you don't value them doesn't mean other people don't.

its also totally locked within the game and has 0 value outside of the game
outside of being a reseller and getting your loot to make money within steam, people paying 500usd for a blue skirt are pretty asinine
the only people playing it smart are the ones that end up making tens, maybe even hundreds of dollars
The current Valve makes me sick.

With the real life collecting you just put something on a shelf and uhhhh
With the virtual items you get to show off every time you play.
Proud to say I've never opened a crate in TF2! More power to those who find it fun, but my enjoyment of the game has never been hampered by my lack of hats. I have spent money on tour of duty tickets and strange weapons, but those actually add something to the gameplay, so I was okay with purchasing them directly. And I did buy a single key once, just so I could trade it away for a strange grenade launcher.
My brother hasn't opened many crates either, but he's already spent way more money on this game than I ever have, and is a prolific trader to boot. He actually bought me some cosmetics because he was tired of staring at my poor, relatively hatless mercenaries. Every week it seems he has a new purchase in mind - I think most recently he's said he wants to have a full strange killstreak festive loadout for Demoman? And this is basically all my fault, cause I was the one who introduced him to the game. :v:
