• Why can't I resize this partition?

Well, there isn't a good way of putting this into words, so here is an image: [media]http://i46.tinypic.com/2mrei49.png[/media]
You cannot extend a volume beyond your space limits. You can shrink (or delete), partition, and extend from there.
Usually partitioned space is called unallocated space, right click on the free space and post a screenshot.
Delete that logical partition containing the free space at the end then you'll be able to extend it.
