• Louisiana issues 'standing order' to make overdose drug available to the public
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An overdose drug is now available to the public without a prescription from a doctor. Naloxone, an antidote medication that reverses an opioid overdose, has previously only been available to medical professionals. The State of Louisiana has issued a "standing order" for the drug, which allows it to be sold over the counter. “Opioid abuse is a concern as 80 percent of heroin users reported starting out misusing prescription opioids. By mid-year 2016, in both East Baton Rouge and Orleans Parishes, narcotic overdose deaths surpassed homicide deaths,” said Governor John Bel Edwards. “As we continue to work to address the addiction problem, this standing order is one step we can take to help reduce the number of unnecessary deaths.”
WAFB
good. great. [editline]24th January 2017[/editline] now give out clean needles and proper treatment and we're halfway there.
It's good from like individual rights standing, because people who use opioid drugs can now buy the medication and not die, and they spend their own money on both of those. But from like a social / statecraft point of view, it means that more people are likely to abuse drugs and have health problems etc. generally lowering their value as workforce and such, so it's bad.

This is gonna allow those who are already addicted to opioids to avoid an early death. There is an opioid epidemic in America and denying people access to treatment is most certainly not the way to fix it.
America is going to have to open areas people can cleanly use opiods if they really want to deal with the issue, but I don't think that'll happen under trump

Though Naloxone effects are quite horrible so I doubt anyone would abuse it this way.
Nah lets be fair, if you can cancel drugs effect anytime you need to, you can get high anytime you wish. Wow, we've had Narcan available here forever...there are still places where this isn't / is just becoming available to the public?

One of the biggest problems we've had so far is people ask for the kits, take the syringe to shoot up and discard the rest of the kit.
good. great. [editline]24th January 2017[/editline] now give out clean needles and proper treatment and we're halfway there.
They do give out clean needles... at least here in Vancouver, Washington / Portland they do. We have what we call the "Needle Exchange" where people can exchange their dirty needles for clean ones. They also give out clean cookers, ties, alcohol prep pads, abcess kits, Narcan, condoms, lube, and free Hepatitis/STI testing. Is using an Intramuscular syringe to slam a common practice? They don't give out clean needles as well? I mean, I've used an IM syringe to slam before, but that's only because my girl had our kit. IM syringes are a fucking HUGE gauge needle. It looks like something you'd tranquilize a fucking horse with. Like it literally costs a few cents a vial. That's why I'm so surprised there are places where this isn't available or is just becoming available. [editline]24th January 2017[/editline] I've had the unfortunate experience of using Narcan several times. The shit WORKS. It really does save lives. This needs to be available everywhere. Seems to me that anyone who was trying to get "high" off Narcan would just go get a bag, IMO.

Addicts, man. They're basically impossible to understand their logic.

If anything, it'll enable those people to actually learn from an otherwise fatal mistake. After all, you can't learn from your mistakes if you die from them.
Overdose isn't something exclusive to druggies either, I had my mom take her pain pills a month ago which put her into a mental state that it was a good idea to have a glass of wine and take more. After that I had to take them away and administer them to her when she asked.
does Naloxone combat oxycodone OD?
wow, here in the rust belt, not only is narcan available to the public, but I see ads for it
does Naloxone combat oxycodone OD?
all opiates

Addicts, man. They're basically impossible to understand their logic.
Wait, you mean people are getting high and then using the Narcan afterwards because they're scared of an OD? Narcan does reverse the effects of an OD... if you were to inject it before an overdose, it would take away any chance of actually getting high... I'm a heroin addict, and this doesn't make sense to me.. if you truly think that the shot you're preparing is going to kill you, it seems to me you just wouldn't do it in the first place. [editline]25th January 2017[/editline] Looks like the same size syringe they give out here. Those fuckers are huge.
Narcan can be sprayed nasally without any needles. Works better if you can get it into their lungs with positive pressure, but it'll absorb into the bloodstream without it. If it's administered to an overdose victim, be prepared for vomiting and/or SEVERE agitation. When you use it, get going to the hospital, cause it doesn't block opiates forever. Naloxone should be fucking available to everyone. It's a miracle drug. My stepfather once had an opiate overdose due to his morphine prescription and it saved his life.
