I know that this is no related to the subject of the mod but god damn I really miss the old times of half-life 1 online and playing half-life 1 mods in general. I miss the whole culture that we had with the words noob and other phrases from back from the days that no one irl knew. Good times man...
I'm still waiting for the final Steam release of Sven Co-op.
Half-Life 1 isn't quite "dead" just yet but that's gonna be the final act for me so to speak.

I know it's probably all just nostalgia but HL1 and the various mods for it seem way more interesting than anything i've seen surrounding Half-Life 2.
Sven Co-Op just felt way better than any co-op for HL2. Felt like, missions? I don't know, felt like you were playing some real game even in the most ridiculous scenarios, for HL2, it just felt like you were dropped into some poorly scripted generic map every time.
I don't quite know how to explain it.

Its the art-style.
Generally HL2 is very washed out and dull looking without texture replacements (which almost noone does) and the art-style in general is very... boring.
HL1 in comparison is much more colorful with a larger array of enemy types.
On top of that, the leap from HL1 to HL2 introduced an 'expected quality' which is hard for modders to catch up to even today.
In HL1 you can make a box room, throw textures on it, and it looks just fine as the game is graphically simple, allowing people to focus more on gameplay and fancy scripting.
Yet in HL2 that same box room with textures would look awkward and out of place without special bushes, models, or textures to make it match the general 'quality' of HL2. This takes time away from developing the gameplay and fancy scripting that makes a map fun as people have to focus on making it look good aswell.

Totally agree, remember all the crazy mods that people just jumped into like Rocket Crowbar, Scientist Slaughter House, Action HL, Firearms?
It's a shame that greedy publishers decided that they didn't want us to mod their games anymore so they can sell us their own over-priced bs.
Whenever I think HL2 modes I think "Generic Combine shooter #8433" or "Generic Zombie Shooter # 77450". Once in a blue moon have I seen a mod that was actually good. Minerva borderlines.
I wish Sven Co-Op went like, free on Steam, if I could play all those custom maps like I did back in the heyday with a large pool of players, I would.

Jaykin' Bacon: Episode 3 has a refreshing 0 combine!
HL1 mods were great because you can find all sorts of crazy shit in there and it won't feel too out of place.
It's much more difficult to do so in HL2.
SMOD and OC were some of the best mods for HL2, imo.
I miss when you ran into nice people
yeah there was a lot of n00b and fagget spewing back then but I can't remember playing a game of HL1/Quake 1/UT where I didn't get a "GG" after every game, and an "NS" once in a while
AdminOP with its radios, grappling hook, gmodesque physgun thing, and entity position scripting was the greatest.
[editline]9th February 2014[/editline]
it was basically hl1 gmod
counter-strike and func_vehicle
I miss the huge abundance of custom maps in Source games, now they seem much less frequently made.
Another Source multiplayer title would be great.

Sven Coop was the best mod with Natural Selection 1 in 2nd.
Then you had shit like They Hunger, Wizard Wars, Brain Bread, AoM, Earth Special Forces, The Specialists.
And then all those mods had a shitload of cool plugins people made for them, like The Specialists had some sick RPG mod where you would play in an RP map like a city/town and you would get jobs, buy houses or rooms, and you could even buy buisnesses, and like jobs had objectives, you could rob stores and shit and be police.
And Sven had all those crazy maps, ESF had one that improved everything.
HL2 didnt have much that was rememberable, Zombie Master was really fucking good though, id play it if it wasnt so dead.

I played the shit out of this game but it's dead now.
Even its successor is dead.
