• Ukraine may switch off pipeline to Europe
Ukraine has warned it might cut Russian oil and gas flows to Europe and ban Russian airlines from crossing its airspace, as Moscow criticised the country for suspending a ceasefire at the crash site of MH17. The measures are part of a sanctions bill targeting Russia that will be submitted to parliament, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said in Kiev. Yatsenyuk explained it could include complete or partial bans on transit of all manner of resources, including energy resources and overflights. Ukraine is the key country for the transport of Russian oil and gas to Europe. Previous energy disputes have resulted in supply cuts for European consumers. Russia in June halted its gas deliveries to Ukraine because of a payment dispute. Yatsenyuk said the Ukrainian parliament was expected to vote on the bill on Tuesday. The draft also envisages sanctions against 172 people -- Russians and other nationalities -- as well as against other countries and 65 companies for "supporting and financing terrorism". Kiev has declared the pro-Russian separatist organisations in eastern Ukraine to be terrorist organisations.
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/latest/ukraine-may-cut-russia-energy-for-europe/story-e6frg90f-1227019823431?nk=2f3d2362824562ef6e50b7936f85bc6a
I wish we could just finally build Canadian nuclear reactors everywhere and flip all of these guys off for once and ever.
Uh, who the fuck does the Ukrainian government think they are to make that decision for all of Europe? They do that, Russia can invade them for all I care.
They aren't required to support export pipelines from a country that just invaded them.
Wow, way to alienate basically everyone who supports you in one glorious act of self-destruction. [editline]10th August 2014[/editline]
They aren't required to support export pipelines from a country that just invaded them.
Except Europe needs what's inside those pipelines and Ukraine has no right to interfere with any of that.
They aren't required to support export pipelines from a country that just invaded them.
We aren't required to support a country that just cut a crucial pipeline they are paid to keep up. I would be far more supportive of Ukraine in this if Ukraine didn't already have abhorrent record of fucking with the pipeline and failing to pay up for it's ration of the gas, hazarding the supply of everyone else. Ukraine is admittedly in deep shit and they need support, but doing something like this unilaterally isn't excusable. [editline]10th August 2014[/editline]
I dunno.. just the guys that own the land that the pipeline is seated on.. that's who. They're probably tired of the limp dick sanctions the rest of the world is imposing, and are going to impose some where they actually hurt.
At this point it would be literally cheaper to leave Ukraine to it's own fate, the sanctions do come with a cost. If Ukraine decides they can just fuck us over without asking then they might as well be left alone to do what they want. Either way, it's definitely not European Union acceptance material.
And it's nice that the pipeline is on their land, but contract is a contract.

And piss off Russia that they might actually invade. Ukraine's government is full of retards if they would actually do this.
Sensationalism and fear-mongering. The Ukrainian government has no reasons to do this
Contract or no contract I don't think Ukraine is obligated to help Russia, who invaded their territory and is backing a civil war that's torn the country apart, export their gas - or Europe, which sat idle during this whole ordeal when they needed help. They're obviously hoping this threat will get Europe's attention.

This is funny. "Well if they cut off our gas, we'll just let russia invade them." Newsflash, you're not really doing anything to protect them anyways. They have nothing to lose at this point. And if you think those pipelines won't be DESTROYED by Ukraine if Europe doesn't stop Russia from invading, you're delusional. You guys need to realize that if you don't help them, you're fucked. Welcome to the "globalized" world. What other countries do DOES affect you and if you don't step in, it will hurt you.

I don't think I've even read about humanitarian aid going into Ukraine from European countries.
Not as if Europe is helping Ukraine anyway. What do they have to lose by cutting it off? European support? What European support?
Not as if Europe is helping Ukraine anyway. What do they have to lose by cutting it off? European support? What European support?
Uh I have no fucking clue
That isn't the support Ukraine needs.
Uh I have no fucking clue
Sanctions? That's it? Hasn't returned Crimea to Ukraine. Hasn't gotten rid of the rebels in eastern Ukraine. Hasn't had Russia stop massing troops near the border.
What the heck do you expect?
What the heck do you expect?
At least financial aid and equipment to Ukraine, if not troops to help. And a bigger stance against Putin other than poking his checkbook a little.
Uh I have no fucking clue
Woo, fucking sanctions and angry letters. The support of rebellion, the illegitimate rigged referendum, the invasion, the occupation of Crimea, Russia is bullying Ukraine around and Europe stands in a podium and delivers speeches expressing disagreement with their actions, they deliver laughable sanctions, when will the EU finally do something useful in times of crisis in their own continent?
While this probably won't come to anything, I advise those of you in the affected areas to look into acquiring some sort of small wood stove and enough firewood to last the winter. Also, fix your insulation if you need to. Also, make sure said wood stove is piping outside properly so you don't kill yourself using it.
Putin alone has more influence in the world than the entire group of European countries as on themselves. Let his political game run wild and this is what happens.
At least financial aid and equipment to Ukraine, if not troops to help.
At least financial aid and equipment to Ukraine, if not troops to help. And a bigger stance against Putin other than poking his checkbook a little.
Ukraine ain't NATO, so no.
Harsher sanctions against Russia would mean that Europe will get fucked too a bit, and of course they don't want that
Europe ought to grow a pair and take care of their own.
Europe ought to grow a pair and take care of their own.
Ukraine ain't "of our own". Until last year they were very pro-russian, barely had anything to do with the EU.
Ukraine ain't NATO, so no.
Then if Europe isn't obligated to protect Ukraine's interests then Ukraine isn't obligated to protect that pipeline. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
Then if Europe isn't obligated to protect Ukraine's interests then Ukraine isn't obligated to protect that pipeline. Serves Europe right for not only giving the Ukraine a shit deal to join the EU but then doing nothing to help. Hopefully they'll get off their arses and do something now.
Ukraine needs something to negotiate with. If Europe isn't going to help Ukraine, why should Ukraine help Europe?
There's a crucial difference between voluntary help and work you have agreed and been paid to do.
