• Japan faces 'extinction' in 1,000 years
Japanese researchers on Friday unveiled a population clock that showed the nation's people could theoretically become extinct in 1,000 years because of declining birth rates. Academics in the northern city of Sendai said that Japan's population of children aged up to 14, which now stands at 16.6 million, is shrinking at the rate of one every 100 seconds. Their extrapolations pointed to a Japan with no children left within a millennium. "If the rate of decline continues, we will be able to celebrate the Children's Day public holiday on May 5, 3011 as there will be one child," said Hiroshi Yoshida, an economics professor at Tohoku University. "But 100 seconds later there will be no children left," he said. "The overall trend is towards extinction, which started in 1975 when Japan's fertility rate fell below two." Yoshida said he created the population clock to encourage "urgent" discussion of the issue. Another study released earlier this year showed Japan's population is expected to shrink to a third of its current 127.7 million over the next century. Government projections show the birth rate will hit just 1.35 children per woman within 50 years, well below the replacement rate. Meanwhile, life expectancy -- already one of the highest in the world -- is expected to rise from 86.39 years in 2010 to 90.93 years in 2060 for women and from 79.64 years to 84.19 years for men. More than 20 percent of Japan's people are aged 65 or over, one of the highest proportions of elderly in the world. Japan has very little immigration and any suggestion of opening the borders to young workers who could help plug the population gap provokes strong reactions among the public. The greying population is a headache for policymakers who are faced with trying to ensure an ever-dwindling pool of workers can pay for a growing number of pensioners. But for some Japanese companies the inverting of the traditional ageing pyramid provides commercial opportunities. Unicharm said Friday that sales of its adult diapers had "slightly surpassed" those for babies in the financial year to March, for the first time since the company moved into the seniors market. Unicharm started selling diapers for babies in 1981 and those for adults in 1987, said spokesman Kazuya Kondo, who declined to give specific figures on the sales.
http://sg.news.yahoo.com/japan-faces-extinction-1-000-years-074534246.html
As soon as the population starts to die out people will just start having more children?
I think they've got more than enough time to find a solution
I really doubt they're gonna just keep dropping to the point of extinction... Good example of sensationalist headline..

Japan is worried about there not being enough people? Japan, "our trains are jam goddamn packed with people", "we have so little space that some of our hotels look like kennels" Japan?
Japan is worried about there not being enough people? Except they pretty much jammed everyone into a select few cities.
Doubt it. Its Japan. They make robotic butts. Soon enough they will all be indestructible robots.
their shy culture is pretty much to blame.
They really should stop making sex toys and start having sex with each other
this doesn't even make sense
Because it's totally possible to predict that, right? I mean, they have difficulties predicting something that happens in the next 5 years, but 1000?
Look, i'll come over there and help.
But then who will feed me sushi!
I think a bigger concern is that the world we call home might not even be habitable in 80+ years.
and why is that? there has been life on earth for thousands of years
We should start a facepunch charity dedicated to sending facepunchers (whom obviously have superior genes) to Japan for the purpose of recreation.
and why is that? there has been life on earth for thousands of years
Radioactive wasteland
I volunteer myself to go to japan and save it from extinction
Based off current trends, that are in absolutely no way going to change at all right?
Because it's totally possible to predict that, right? I mean, they have difficulties predicting something that happens in the next 5 years, but 1000?
No they are assuming the birth rate continues at it's current rate.
no, japan does not face 'extinction' in 1000 years.
We should start a facepunch charity dedicated to sending facepunchers (whom obviously have superior genes) to Japan for the purpose of recreation.
it's procreation not recreation although I guess it can be recreation as well
their shy culture is pretty much to blame.
At first I disagreed, then I looked up on Wikipedia:
According to a government survey, more than a quarter of unmarried men and women between the ages of 30 and 34 are virgins. 50% of men and women in Japan said they were not “going out with anybody”.[
whut
no, japan does not face 'extinction' in 1000 years.
Dude, have you even seen Godzilla?
I volunteer myself to go to japan and save it from extinction
Aren't they big fans of shark fin soup?
No they are assuming the birth rate continues at it's current rate.
Yes, I know, but they change and that's what makes it completely unpredictable.
At first I disagreed, then I looked up on Wikipedia: whut
Well coming from a Japanese family and being Japanese myself I can pretty much confirm this. I remember when my ex always wanted to hold hands with me in public. Nope. Too shy. It's like genetically wired into us to be reserved and polite, it feels really awkward to watch two people climbing all over one another.
Guess I'll just have to go over there and help them repopulate
At first I disagreed, then I looked up on Wikipedia: whut
They suffer from a uniquely unadaptable mindset. The old cannot adapt to the young, the young cannot adapt to the old, and so the entirety of society stratifies into smaller and smaller groups. Each one judging the other and themselves, bleeding out members through alienation until everyone is alone. They don't know how to accept each other, or themselves. It's sad.
Because it's totally possible to predict that, right? I mean, they have difficulties predicting something that happens in the next 5 years, but 1000?
Do you not understand statistics and extrapolation? It's pretty simple, here's what you do: 1. Take the total current population of Japan 2. Take the current death rate in Japan 3. Take the current birth rate in Japan Now you check how many people will die each year, and the number of people born in Japan each year and if the dead number is bigger then it means Japan is in decline. If it is bigger, then you divide that number into the total population and you'll have a rough guide of how long it'll take. Kaboom, easy, science bitch.
